Why Become Certified? (Reprint July 2005 Article)

An Associate East Bay member recently asked Certified member Patricia St. John, "Why become certified?"  Patricia has generously submitted her reply for publication in these announcements for all of our members who might consider certification now or in the future....

I think, for me, there were personal and professional reasons I wanted to become certified. Personally, I wanted the affirmation that my design skill was of a 'certifiable' quality. There are plenty of designers who go through the process and don't qualify to become certified, and so the certification meant even more to me. It does signify a certain level of skill, knowledge and execution. And I do use the letters 'APLD' after my name. People sometimes ask me what they mean and it gives me a chance to let them know there is a professional organization and that there are standards for being a certified designer.

Additionally, when I take residential plans to various cities' planning departments, they treat me with the same respect as a landscape architect. The letters APLD mean a certain standard and level of knowledge and skill to them also.

Professionally, when Laurie Callaway and company met with, and fought for, our right to practice landscape design in California in 2004, the most impressive tool was our certification process and the percentage of members who went through the process of having their work judged by a standard. I think the only way our professional organization will achieve the credibility of being high-caliber professionals is by having a standard to measure our skills. Many other states are going through similar challenges, and the more of us who become certified, the more credibility we have as a national organization, and the more we support the designers in other states in their battles to gain the right to practice.

I have watched "Landscaper's Challenge" on the HGTV channel, and I am appalled at some of the poor designs. There are plenty of bad designers out there, and there are plenty of good ones too. One way the public can get a clue that they have a chance of hiring a good designer, is the knowledge that the designer has gone through a rigorous process of becoming certified. The certification process is a gateway into the profession and elevates the landscape design field to that of a respected profession.

I hope you will consider it...it makes a difference to others and to the profession as a whole.

 -- Patricia St. John

Designing with Succulents hits bestseller list

Author and garden-and-design writer Debra Lee Baldwin announces that her new book, Designing with Succulents (Timber Press, April '07) is on Amazon.com's list of the top ten best-selling gardening books.

Designing with Succulents shows these sculptural, easy-care plants in applications that range from grand-scale landscapes to intimate vignettes. The book offers:

-- More than 50 genera of the best succulents for residential landscapes.

            -- 90 easy-care, drought-tolerant companion plants.

-- 310 photos of exceptional public and private gardens.

-- The creativity of 22 professional landscapers and 30 innovative homeowners.

-- Dozens of appealing ideas for container plantings.

-- An entire chapter devoted to colorful foliage.

Sunset magazine garden editor Kathleen Brenzel says the book "inspires us to look at succulents as living sculptures whose myriad shapes and colors create striking effects. Many people know about succulents, but using them well in the landscape is another matter. Designing with Succulents shows us how; it's inspiring, practical, and complete -- a treasure for any gardener who loves these otherworldly beauties."

Landscape designer Maureen Gilmer praised "Designing with Succulents" in her nationally-syndicated column: "Baldwin should be commended for what might be the best succulent landscaping book written to date. This is an immense undertaking with such a vast range of plants, many from significantly different climates of origin. I'm thrilled to have this great book in my reference library and will recommend it to novice and pro alike."

Baldwin will be presenting at the Huntington Botanical Gardens on Thursday, June 14th at 2:30 PM; at the San Diego Horticultural Society on July 9th at 6:00 PM.; at the Ruth Bancroft Garden on July 14th at Sherman Gardens on Saturday, August 4th at 9:30 AM.; and at the Los Angeles Arboretum on Thursday, October 4th at 9:30 AM.

She also invites our members to let her know if they've done anything interesting with succulents. "Please keep me in mind," Baldwin says. "I write for publications that are always looking for innovative ideas, and I will likely do a second book."
