May is for Magical, Musical at Holy Family
Welcome to the May issue of The Good News, the e-newsletter for our Holy Family parish. This month, we feature two articles about activities
set to
transform us to the timeliness magic of Hollywood and transfer us back to the 1940s New York of Damon Runyan's stories. And both support worthwhile
activities of our parish and community.
And, we'll step back in time with a new feature, "Highlights of History," as we begin to look at Holy Family's past as a new committee plans our
100th anniversary celebration in 2010.
As we do each month, we'll have a personal reflection from a member of our parish community. This month, we're fortunate to hear from two young
people who received the sacraments of First Communion or Confirmation this past month. For second grader Ellis DeJardin, this momentous time in her
life means, "you get Jesus fully, and after you get it, you feel really good."
We hope the newsletter will help increase contact with you about the many activities of our Holy Family community. We invite you to keep reading -
and responding! You may reach us with comments or story ideas at newsletter@holyfamily.org.

Holy Family Becomes Hollywood in its Heyday
From the pizzazz to the paparazzi, everything is in place to transform
the Holy Family of today into Hollywood in its heyday. The 2008 Holy
Family
Auction, with a theme of "The Golden Age of Hollywood: An Affair to
Remember, A Time to Dream" is this Saturday, May 17.
The evening will begin as guests are greeted on a red carpet and guided
down Holy Family's own "walk of fame." The excitement continues with
live and
silent auctions, a raffle, dinner and dancing. The event starts at 5:00
p.m. and ends with Mass at 11:30 p.m.
True to its theme, this benefit remembers the needs of our parish and
community, and reaches out to help others fulfill their dreams. The
event
raises funds to support important causes at our church and in our
community.
Invitation for Involvement
There's still time to join in the glamour and good times. You may

Words of Wisdom on First Communion and
Confirmation
In April and May, 218 young people received the sacraments of First Communion or Confirmation. We are fortunate to have two share their reflections
with us.
Savannah Moore, who was confirmed by Bishop Gerald Wilkerson on April 28, 2008, wrote:
"Confirmation is very important to me because it is allowing me
to voice my acceptance of Catholicism and Jesus Christ into my life. It also allows me to get in touch with my spiritual self, for instance, one of
the most moving moments to me was adoration during my retreat. I felt God's love which is something I will hold onto throughout my life. Confirmation
helped me to realize that I can carry on through any situation as long as I have God's love."
And, Ellis DeJardin, a second grader at Holy Family School, made her First Communion on April 26. She shared her impressions by answering a couple of
questions:
What does it mean to receive the body and blood of Christ?
"To me, it means that you get Jesus fully, and after you get it, you feel really good."
What advice do you have for next year's second graders who will go through First Communion?
"It's exciting. Try not to be nervous. Try not to make a face when you drink the wine. Try not to let the camera see you lick your lips. Be ready
and be happy."
Thank you, Savannah and Ellis.

May has Meaning in Holy Family
History
The month of May is special in Holy Family Church history. It was on May 10, 1910, that the first Mass was held in a new parish formed to serve the
75 Catholic families living in South Pasadena.
In two years, we will commemorate our parish's 100th anniversary. A committee of volunteers and staff is being formed to plan our centennial
celebrations.
But for now, back to 1910. The first Sunday services were held in a small cottage on land purchased by the diocese. This piece of land, on the corner
of El Centro and Fremont, is where the South Pasadena Post Office is today. Dr. R. J. Cotter, the priest assigned to the new parish, presided.
Masses were held in the cottage until August 1910, when a bungalow church was completed on the site. Our beautiful church, on its current site, was
dedicated on Easter Sunday in 1928.
We look forward to sharing more of our Holy Family history with you in the coming months.
Invitation for Involvement
Look for information in the bulletin in the next few months on how to get involved in the planning for our centennial.
