EQUAL FINANCIAL AID TREATMENT CREATES ADDED BENEFIT TO MET STUDENTS
This month, parents of college-bound
high school seniors everywhere are filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2007-2008 school year. The federal aid
program considers all financial resources available to a student and determines the student’s eligibility for various types and amounts of
student aid. New this year: savings in 529 prepaid tuition programs, such as the Michigan Education Trust (MET), are recognized as a parental asset
rather than a student resource. Now only 6% of the contract's value is calculated into the student’s financial aid package, instead of the
previous dollar-for-dollar reduction. As a result, more students may qualify for additional financial assistance for higher education.
WHAT IF I BUY A CONTRACT AND MY CHILD DOESN’T WANT TO ATTEND A MICHIGAN PUBLIC COLLEGE?
No problem.
MET contracts are portable. Students may direct a refund amount to any degree-granting college or university. That means refunds from MET contracts
can be made directly to private colleges here in Michigan or out-of-state colleges and universities. Refunds can also be used at an institution that
offers a diploma or certificate program, such as a cosmetology or trade school, as long as the institution is an approved higher education
institution under the U.S. Department of Education guidelines. Refund options are
also available for military enlistment, death or disability, or for those who decide not to attend college.
