Strong Communities Campaign

We celebrated the achievements of the YMCA's Strong Communities Campaign on March 5, announcing a total of $810,639 raised as of that evening. Our efforts to raise support for our mission have continued and we have now raised $882,041 for the 2008 Strong Communities Campaign. This important effort provides resources so our Y programs and services can be accessible by all – through financial assistance and reduced fees. While hundreds of volunteers take this message into the community from November to March, we continue throughout the year to share the good work of the Y and encourage others to join us in making our mission possible. It is never too late to give or ask others to join you. Your involvement and support is greatly appreciated and valued. Each donor truly makes a difference in helping the Y build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

Update COMPLI and Win!

Have you logged into COMPLI lately? COMPLI is our Policy Binder for HR and Risk related policies such as FMLA, Worker's Compensation, ADA and Harassment. COMPLI is a great resource for you as staff to use if you have questions concerning a policy or procedure.

As a YMCA employee you are required to sign off on policies and take training courses. If you have not already done so please check with your supervisor to allow time for you to complete your COMPLI inbox. If you need assistance with your login information please contact Heather Jackson or Annette Johnson for assistance at 503.223.9622.

Complete COMPLI for a chance to win $100 towards a party at your location! We will be having an on-going drawing for the location that is most compliant in COMPLI. In order to be eligible, your location must be 85% compliant. The drawings will be held in May, August and October.

Prescription Discount Cards

Our benefit administrator has given us prescription discount cards that all staff will be able to utilize. These cards will give you discounts whether you have insurance or do not have insurance at participating pharmacies such as Walgreen's, K-Mart and Costco. Please see your HR Cabinet representative if you are interested in receiving one of these cards or contact the HR Department

Mind Body Spirit

Healthy Spirit, Mind and Body
Preventive Medicine for a Healthier You
Preventive medicine can be defined as the portion of health care that is concerned with preventing disease. Preventive health focuses on the health of individuals and defined populations to help protect, promote, and maintain health, as well as prevent disease, disability and premature death.

Many of us do not think of our benefit plan as a tool for preventive medicine but it is. Two simple things we like to promote to staff are annual health exams and taking health assessments. By getting routine check ups, you will have appropriate tests completed with the opportunity to discuss any health concerns with your physician. The results from the tests can help fully complete your health assessment and thereby gives the individual a baseline. By using these two tools, a built in support system is in place should a medical issue or diagnosis occurs. Even if you feel fine, it still important to see your health care provider regularly to check for potential problems. Most people who have high blood pressure don't even know it. The only way to find out is to have your blood pressure checked regularly. Likewise, high blood sugar and high cholesterol levels often do not produce any symptoms until advanced disease has occurred. Adults should visit their health care provider periodically, even if they are healthy. The purpose of these visits is to screen for diseases, assess risk of future medical problems, encourage healthy lifestyles, update vaccinations and maintain a relationship with a doctor in the event of an illness.

Noteworthy, Life Changing and Fun Stuff Around the Y

Please welcome Alanna Finn as our new YMCA Director of Development. This position oversees the Association-wide Strong Communities Campaign and is part of the Financial Development team at the Association Services Office.
Alanna chimed in: I am very excited to be part of the YMCA community. I am eager to get to know our programs, visit the different sites and begin working together to achieve our mission. I bring five years of experience in development. For the past four years I worked at the National Psoriasis Foundation in all aspects of their development program. I grew up in Portland and went to college at Occidental College in Los Angeles. I enjoy working out, being outdoors, traveling and spending time with family and friends. I got engaged a few weeks ago and am looking forward to a wedding in 2009.

Please welcome Trevor Erion to the Child Care Division. He is the new Child Care Director of Development, aka the fundraising guy for child care, camping and teens. Trevor's office is in the Outback over at ASO, stop on by and say hello.

Rachael Littlejohn from the ODS Tower Child Development Center was excepted in the 2008 Director's Cohort. They only selected 20 applicants in the whole state of Oregon. Rachael will be graduating May 3rd 2008! Way to go Sherry Scott and Derek Winton also from ODS Tower for dedicating their Saturday to the eight hour training with Beverly Boss. And, congratulations to Terry Dagg from ODS for completing the third step to obtaining her Child Development Credential.

From Julie Koch Gladstone CDC Director. We talk about being on the right seat on the bus in Good to Great. I have a teacher, Josh who was my Kindergarten teacher. I could tell he was struggling and not real happy. I asked him if he would like the opportunity to try Pre- 2. My teacher had just left. He is so thankful and happy and most importantly the kids are happy and he is doing an awesome job. He had his dad dress up as the Cat in the Hat! He came for a visit and you would have thought he was the real thing! Remember you may have a great staff who is just not in the right place. I feel so fortunate to have the staff that I have who step up when we are so short staffed and who worry more about me doing to many hours than themselves. God really blessed me when he sent me to Gladstone. It is truly HAPPY ROCK!

Welcome Erich Goebel to the Beaverton Family YMCA Facility. Erich is a ten year veteran of YMCA service. He has spent the majority of that time serving the members of the Metro Family Facility. When there was an opening and a chance for advancement at the Beaverton facility, Erich applied and we are happy to report that he has begun his new position of Administrative Assistant and he is doing great.

The
Beaverton Family YMCA will miss Shawn Gardner. She has given four years a great service and is going to pursue other ventures. We will miss her and wish her well.

In 2006 the Beaverton Facility officially changed its name from Griffith Park Family YMCA to Beaverton Family YMCA. In April 2008 the facility has finished replacing all the old "Griffith" signage. The Building now has a big new Beaverton Family YMCA sign, come by, have a work out and see the new sign.

Please join us in congratulating some staff members who have taken on new responsibilities at Clark County Family YMCA. Eddie White has been promoted to our Associate Executive Director and will be responsible for the day to day operations of the branch. Mike Brennan who has been selected as our new Membership Director and will be leading our amazing team in providing exceptional service to all of you while recruiting new YMCA members with your help.

Jean Schwarm, Health and Wellness instructor for the Sherwood Regional Family YMCA, has been selected as their Staff Member of the Year for 2007.
