ΣΠ Brothers with the Alpha pledge class on Bid

ΣΠ Hits Milestone
Achievement
John Carter
Two years of diligent labor came to maturity this week, as the ΘΩ chapter
of ΣΠ fraternity accepted their Alpha class of new members. This is actually the fourth time they have participated
in formal recruitment, but the first as a chartered organization, and by far the most successful.
President John Bryan said the class, 12 members strong, is ideal for
ΣΠ’s 27 man active chapter, considering their relative youth on the Greek scene. “Finding success, in
terms of recruitment, has been a learning process for us, and we’re still making constant improvements. This year was our
first true attempt at a summer recruitment program, and it was tremendously helpful.”
The focus now shifts to getting the Alpha class, as a whole, to full membership.
Bryan went on to say, “We have made it our goal as a chapter to have not only the highest retention rate on campus, but also to
initiate 100% of our new members. We have recruited quality gentlemen that we feel will all become valuable assets as we continue
to grow and develop both on campus and in the community.”

Alpha Chi Omega’s Domestic Violence
Week
Sarah Russell
For most members of the Greek community, October means fight song practices,
float building, and finding time to balance schoolwork with social events. But to the ladies of Alpha Chi Omega, October also
represents a time to devote extra commitment to its national philanthropy. During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month,
several organizations across campus and the community strive to educate and support those who have been affected by domestic violence.
Alpha Chi Omega has designated October 8-12 to be Domestic Violence Week on
campus. On Monday, they held a candlelight vigil that not only raised awareness for domestic violence, but also paid remembrance
to those who have been victims of these crimes.
From 10-2 on Tuesday through Thursday, AXΩ will be collecting donations
on the KUC Knoll for Soles for Souls. Soles 4 Souls is an organization that collects and distributes shoes to people in need all
over the world. Students can either donate shoes they no longer wear or make a cash donation. A donation as
small as $2 will buy a pair of flip-flops for someone who truly needs them.
Although October is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness month, Alpha Chi
Omega volunteers its time and efforts year round to the cause. By volunteering hours at the Rutherford County Domestic Violence
Shelter, cooking dinners for the victims that live there, and raising money through fundraisers like Raiderstock, Alpha Chi Omega works hard to
support the victims and raise awareness for an issue that affects more people than many would expect.
“Domestic violence is not something that just happens to people you
don’t know. Your best friend could be going through it and you may not even know it,” said Sarah Gann, Philanthropy
and Fundraising Chair for Alpha Chi. “Many people don’t realize what abuse is and how much it affects
people. It’s something I didn’t fully understand until I worked at the shelter.”
If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, call

Chauntelle Addison of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. |
Greek of the Week
Jonathan Joy
During the week of October 8, 2007 there will be one Greek to outshine all
others. Chauntelle Addison, member of Delta Sigma Theta, coordinated an event that is intended to remind MTSU students of the
heartache caused by hurricane Katrina.
The Katrina Drive is designed to collect needed items for the victims of the hurricane, as
well as educate MTSU students about the struggles they still face today. Items will be collected on October 8 and 10 in the KUC
lobby and an informational forum will be held on October 10 in the State Farm room of the BAS.
“Helping the community and giving back is what we as Deltas do,” said
Addison. “I am a firm believer that people should be that difference that they want to see. This belief
motivates me to be an example and make a difference, no matter how big or small, within the community so that others will do the
same.”
Addison is a junior pursuing a degree in Marketing and a minor in Business
Administration.
“My future goals are to pursue a graduate degree in the business field and a career in
marketing as well,” Addison said.
Most of Addison’s campus involvement is with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is
the 2nd Vice President of her chapter and presides over the programs and events. Addison is also involved with several
other campus organizations. She has graced her community with several hours of community service. To add to her
active involvement, she also works part-time at Wet Seal in Hickory Hollow Mall.

Campus Safety Forum
Whitney Carr
It seems like lately we have heard a lot about safety issues around campus. From stolen bikes
to an attack on a female student in Cummings Hall, attention has been raised about what is happening, or not happening, that is allowing these crimes
to occur. Many students who have questions for area police and faculty will have the chance to get those questions answered this week. SGA is teaming
up with Campus Police to hold a forum for students on Wednesday October 10. There will be a panel consisting of important figures ranging from VP of
Student Affairs Dr. Bob Glenn to MTSU Chief of Police Buddy Peaster. The forum is intended for students living on campus, but is open for all
concerned students at MTSU. If you have any questions or ideas for the panel please come out. The forum will be held from 4:30-6:30 in the KUC
Theater.

ΣΦΕ During the Community Clean Up |
Oh the Places You’ll go!!!
Jason N. Gerald
“You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed. You'll pass the whole gang
and you'll soon take the lead.” When former SigEp, Dr. Seuss, wrote these words in his book entitled, Oh The Places
You’ll Go, he knew that it would serve as motivation to excel in all aspects of one’s life. This is what the
Sigma Phi Epsilon TN Theta chapter at MTSU tried to instill in their new members at their community clean up on September 30th,
2007. The day after Bid Day, the TN Theta chapter asked for volunteers from the Spring and Fall ’07 classes to walk a mile
on East Main St. and pick up all trash, and surprisingly, almost fifty percent of the two classes graciously accepted the challenge.
When new member Korbin Kritch was asked what he gained
from the community service, he responded, “I gained a great sense of teamwork, and I realized that when a motivated group of brothers work
towards a common goal, then it is much more easily achieved.” In addition, new member Levi Lombardo stated that he learned
that he has to do some work if he wants to have a good time. The Sigma Phi Epsilon TN Theta chapter truly focused on quality over
quantity this recruitment season, and they were thoroughly impressed with their 17 new members. Although the Greek community must
always work to dispel its many stereotypes, new member Josh Welch said it best when he firmly stated that “it’s not just partying, you
have to give back also.”
