Dr. Thomas Shepherd President, Ross University |
President’s
Message
As we get ready to turn the clocks back
in the U.S. once again, I suddenly realized how quickly the end of another calendar year is approaching, and with it, the end of another
successful semester.
A reflection of 2008 shows continued improvement throughout the University. This past
June’s first graduation at Madison Square Garden was the largest graduating medical class and one of the largest veterinary classes in our
history—meaning that once again Ross University provided more physicians and veterinarians for the United States than any other school in the
world. Dr. Alvin Richard Tarlov, professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, and pet expert Steve Dale offered encouragement and insight with
their commencement addresses.
In other news, our Bahamas location in on schedule and will be ready for our
students’ arrival in January, and the School of Veterinary Medicine is set to host another successful alumni reunion and continuing education
(CE) program. This year’s program is full of instructive and recreational activities, including CE sessions that will be led by Dr. Dean
Richardson, an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon who you will read more about in this issue.
This issue also recognizes this year’s 14 PRIDE winners, including Dr.
Jane Sandquist who was awarded the Diamond PRIDE award—the highest level of recognition of the PRIDE program. Elsewhere in this newsletter you
will find an article highlighting a member of our alumni who holds the distinction of being the only neuro-oncologist in Southern Arizona, as well as
a fourth semester veterinary student who is assisting with the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network and the Georgia Sea Turtle
Center.
In closing, this is a wonderful time of year. It is a time of reflection to be sure,
but also to rest and enjoy our families and loved ones, and to prepare for the opportunities that lay before us in 2009. Thank you for your efforts in
continuing to help us realize our mission.
I wish you and your families the very best of the upcoming holiday season.

Ross University Offers Condolences
It is with great sadness and regret that we extend our deepest sympathies to the
families and friends of Kevin Kizer, a promising medical student.
Although only 27, Kevin had already earned a reputation for having wide-ranging
interests, which included a love of life and music.
His friends remembered him with words like, “courageous,”
“caring,” “pleasant,” “funny,” “a great conversationalist,” and “a wonderful person who
would have made a caring doctor.”
All of us at Ross University are deeply saddened and devastated by the loss of this
young, bright and talented student, but at the same time, we are proud to have known him. His future gifts to the medical profession will be sorely
missed.
