Yahoo! Group Members Give Great Gravel Guidance
- by John Black

What started simply enough as a request on the APLD California Chapter's Yahoo! Group for examples of attractive gravel driveways, turned into a landslide of information covering examples, materials, and design considerations for permeable surfacing. Peninsula members recommended two sites in Menlo Park: Kelly Greenwood's project on Stanford Avenue, and Peggy Hinman's design on Santa Rita Avenue. While not technically a driveway, the Rodin sculpture garden at Stanford was a favorite (with bonus raves for the Andrew Goldsworthy installation nearby). And a bit farther north, Nick Thayer has created a touch of Provence in a Napa courtyard using not only gravel, but also decomposed granite (DG).

The favored materials in these and other permeable areas tend to be gravel such as the Sonoma Gold or Desert Gold granite, especially in 3/8" and 5/8" diameter sizes. It was noted that the larger the rock, the less its tendency to spread. Conversely, DG fines--granules smaller than 1/4"--was prone to clumping, cracking, and "muckiness." To prevent instability, designers suggested a layer of Class 2 base rock beneath the DG, and mechanically compacting the base and the fines. A soil stabilizer such as PolyPavement or Soil Sement may also be used. These products contain polymers that bind the soil particles together, while still allowing varying degrees of porosity: in high concentrations, stabilizers can make a DG pathway as impermeable as asphalt; at lower application rates, they allow drainage comparable to gravel. With so many different materials options, there are also many considerations to keep in mind when designing with gravels and fines. If the materials are too smooth or round (e.g. river pebbles), they can slip under feet and tires instead of compacting safely. Even with a stabilizing additive, DG paths may not be stable on hillsides, and may still be susceptible to weeds (although a barrier fabric below can help). Leaves and other unsightly debris may be difficult to remove from a granular surface. Finally, municipalities may require solid surfacing adjacent to sidewalks, to minimize slipping hazards. Check local construction codes, and talk with materials suppliers as well, about these and other design considerations.

Thanks to John Black, Marcia Bloom, Frances Dahlquist, Maureen Decombe, KT Foust, Kelly Greenwood, Debby Ruskin, Nick Thayer, and Susan Wyche for contributing to the discussion so far... now log on and add your own experience and opinions!

- by Janet Bell

At every conference, there is one evening that offers 1/2 hour sessions during the Exhibitor's Showcase.  There are four of these sessions, two running concurrently before and after the Showcase.  This is an opportunity for our California members to share with the rest of the membership, and I invite (and need) your support and expertise to create presentations that will be relevant and inspirational.  General ideas so far include: Sharing our Mentoring Program; Sustainability (lots of options here); Balancing our businesses with our personal lives.  Please email me if you are interested in working on this.  We have to come up with general concepts by October 12th and can work on specific content after that. Patio and Deck locations in California
- by Kathryn Keller

I am looking for patio and deck locations in California that the magazine could shoot in the next month or so. These would be well-established with plants, where appropriate, and well kept. Stylistically, projects slightly on the more traditional side would be best, but most importantly they would showcase good design and excellent craftsmanship. For any particular project to be considered, I would need to see scouting photos, preferably digitally as soon as possible, since we need to photograph in the next month or so. Let me know if the location has been published before, and if so, where. Please send by mail to Kathryn Keller, Executive Editor, This Old House Magazine, 27th floor, 1185 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10036 or email Kathryn_Keller@timeinc.com

Opportunities Still Available at the 2007 San Francisco Flower & Garden Show -by Kay Estey

Show Producer Kay Estey announces still-available opportunities to participate in the 2007 San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, a world-class event drawing up to 60,000 participants. First, contractors are being sought to co-create a show garden with Garden Design Magazine. The selected contractor will be listed as an equal partner and will receive substantial publicity across three issues of the Magazine. Second, two garden creators are still being sought. Those who create gardens for the show do so to promote their business, increase name recognition, and demonstrate their talents, viewing the show as a way of increasing sales and moving up a level, even in a tough economic climate. Many changes in Show public relations, marketing, guidance, and procedures will assist garden creators. The 2007 theme is "Living & Loving the Garden Life". For more on these opportunities, contact Kay Estey at kay@gardenshow.com or (415) 771-6909.
