Attending the CPR+ user conference this year was almost like attending a miniature NHIA meeting, or maybe one of the early meetings.  Held at a Las Vegas resort it offered educational opportunities and a tremendous opportunity for exhibitors to get in front of home infusion providers.  Rock-Pond was given the opportunity to provide an hour presentation showing how Home Infusion Reports will change the way you access and use information in your business.

Bad Debt Reserve Analysis 

 

Calculating bad debt reserve is critical to accurate financial statements and projections.  Usually this is done by the accounting staff using time consuming and complicated Excel spreadsheets where the reserves are based on the age of the receivable and who it is due from.  The two reports below are examples of how you can use the power of Home Infusion Reports to get this information directly from your information system.

System Implementation:  Hear it, see it, do it and teach it

At what point do we actually internalize something new.  It’s a common learning principle that we don’t really learn by just hearing something.  We must put it into practice, and be tested on our understanding in order to become proficient.  Take this a step further and require your staff to teach what they learn and you’ll help them take their learning to a new level.  The process of showing someone else how to do something is one of the best ways to deepen your own understanding.  If you can teach something, then you know it. 

 

System Audit:  Implement time based metrics to improve efficiencies

The revenue process in a home infusion company is very time dependent.  When everything is done in the proper time, the reimbursement process goes much smoother.  Setting up metrics to measure the time it takes to process a new referral, confirm an outstanding delivery ticket, pick up DME equipment after a patient is discharged,  generate a bill from the time the ticket is confirmed, process a NCPDP rejection or claim denial, bill a secondary payer and close an accounting period are examples of key processes that should be measured in a home infusion company. 

 
 

System Error: Disaster strikes - how long will it take you to get access to your data?

We have all experience data loss or system failure to some degree.  Luckily, most of us have not had to work through the recovery from a catastrophic event.  Fortunately the backup and restore options available to you are exponentially improved if your data is stored in a SQL Server.  Did you know you can backup your data while the data is in use?  Did you know you can set up automated incremental backups to only back up the data that has changed?  There are many third party tools and services to give you the offsite backup you need where you can restore your data at any time with very minimal loss and no corruption.  Evaluate a company like US DataTrust to see just how easy it is to set up incremental backups with immediate access when you have an emergency.

Insurance Companies play to win .. you should too! By Gary Collins, Professional Reimbursement, Inc.
This week I received a call from an infusion company that wanted help with recovering a large accounts receivable balance. This amount was based on one particular drug therapy for one specific payer. The insurance company had paid some of the initial claims and then advised the provider that the claims were paid in error. The provider would have to pay back the monies or the payer would offset payments on future claims. Furthermore, the payer informed the provider that the patient could not be held liable for the charges.    Learn More

KVO's on Intermittant Pump Infusions 

I don't supply a lot of these anymore but now have a patient on q 4hr PCN 4mu and which is going well. I've had problems in the past with KVO's less than 1ml per hour and so I don't go below this. I also add in volume for priming and the KVO and don't count this in the daily dose.
 
 I'd like to know other providers approach and results. Has anyone gone without KVO's on Groshong type catheters (I'm thinking about 24 hr or longer Vanco bags) or had success with lower rates i.e. 0.1ml/hr. Do you count the KVO volume for the total daily dose?

Getting an "A" boarding pass on Southwest Airlines

 

For those who travel, getting a good seat on a long flight is important.  If you are traveling Southwest Airlines that means getting an “A” boarding pass.  You can get these at Southwest.com exactly 24 hours before departure and on some flights, the A’s go fast.  The next time you are not at a computer or don’t have access to a printer, try this:  Have a friend (or one of your kids) log in for you, put in your confirmation number and get the boarding pass on the screen.  Instruct them to print it to a PDF file and email it to you.  If you are in a hotel room without access to a printer, simply get the pass, print it to a file and when you get to the airport, tell them you lost it and they’ll reprint it for you, saving your place in line with the other “A” passengers.
