A Closer Look at Direct Sales
On the Direct Selling Association’s web site, http://www.dsa.org/, you’ll find some compelling
statistics about direct selling in the US.
- Over $30 billion in sales
- Over 14 million people in direct sales
- Almost 70% of sales take place in the home
So, how does is work and why does it work so well for so many people?
People trust personal recommendations versus media
advertising. Hollywood has used it for years—word of mouth! You’ll go to a movie your friend
tells you is great more readily than you’ll go based on an ad.
We’re experiencing a home-based business
boom—one in eight households is a home-based business. The majority of direct sellers work part-time from home and
don’t worry about downsizing or offshore outsourcing of jobs. No more commute; no more bosses and you can expand your
business anywhere without giving up family.
Entry into direct sales offers a low investment and low
overhead with a high return and a high potential. There’s no glass ceiling and it’s easy to get started.
Access to national and international markets mean you can
build your business anywhere.
Income tax and savings benefits with new programs for
one-person 401(k) plans, SEP IRA’s and Health Savings Accounts. Tax benefits for in home office deductions, travel expenses
and many others. (Check with your accountant.)
Working for a salary won’t buy you financial
freedom and trading time for money leads nowhere because the day you stop working is the day you stop getting paid. Residual
income is income that comes in after you complete the work to create it. Donald Trump on direct sales’ stability states,
“It has proven itself to be a viable and rewarding source of income.” Residual income is the name of the game.
Direct sales is open to everyone—all ages, races,
genders, and economic status. According to the Direct Selling Association of those in direct sales, 24% have a high school
education; 32% some college, technical or trade school; 35% college, and 8% a post graduate education. You don’t need a
specialized background and success is not always guaranteed to those with the most polished sales skills. It’s not the
price, but how the transaction makes the person feel.
Direct sales promotes core values.
People want to make a difference and live a life of passion and purpose. It’s not enough to earn a living
anymore. People are hungry for a proven way to prosper through a lifestyle that contributes to the greater good of all.
Direct sales has been around for over a hundred
years—the best-kept secret is getting out! In 2002 Warren Buffett bought Pampered Chef and now owns three direct selling
companies. His comment about owning direct sales companies—“The best investment I ever made.” Time
Warner Publications owns Southern Living at Home. Other Fortune 500 companies and major investors owning direct sales
companies: Citigroup, The Body Shop, Nestle, Reader’s Digest, Unilever, Hallmark Cards, Remington, Sarah Lee, Vanity Fair
and Jockey.
