The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Wire e-newsletter was created to give our Chamber-member small business owners the
practical advice and information you need to succeed in these challenging economic times.
We are sending this newsletter to all Chamber-member companies with 25 or fewer employees and Small Business Council members. If you find this
publication valuable, please feel free to forward it to your colleagues and encourage them to subscribe. If you no longer wish to receive Small
Business Wire, please scroll down to the end of this message and click the "opt out" link.

Lifelong learning opportunities are key to success
For many small businesses, managing through the economy is all about getting back to basics. Part of doing so is taking advantage of learning and
development opportunities. This might include picking up that business book you have been meaning to read, reconnecting with a mentor, or making the
most of your professional associations and affiliations.
Here are some tips from www.lifehack.org to help you keep your saw sharpened.
1) Always strive to have a book, and take it with you so you can read it when you have time.
2) Keep a "to-learn" list on which you write ideas for new areas of study.
3) Teach others: Start a blog, mentor someone or even discuss ideas with a friend.
4) Let your intuition guide you to make self-education more enjoyable.
5) Use the first 15 minutes of your morning as a period for education.
The daily activities of owning a small business present myriad learning opportunities. On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the Small Business
Council's Informed & Inspired Speaker Series will feature local leader Joe Scarlett, former chairman of
Tractor Supply Company. Scarlett will address the ways continued learning shaped his life and his business success, and how this led to the
development of the Scarlett Leadership
Institute at Belmont University.
