Fall 2008

Join Us for Garden Expo 2009, !

Join WPT Feb. 13-15 at the Exhibition Hall of the Alliant Energy Center for Garden Expo - a celebration of all things green and growing.  Garden Expo is a community educational and fundraiser hosted by WPT and the UW-Extension/Cooperative Extension Horticulture Team.  This event is a companion to The Wisconsin Gardener with Shelley Ryan.  Hundreds of vendors will offer garden and landscaping products and services, while gardening experts present dozens of educational seminars and demonstrations on a wide variety of topics.  Last year, nearly 20,000 people attended Garden Expo.

Almost 250 volunteers are needed to set up the show, sell tickets, assist presenters, check-in volunteers and answer questions at the information desk.  As a thank you for volunteers, we provide free parking and admission to the show.

Online registration will open on Monday, November 17th.  To register, please visit our website at wpt.org/volunteer to see all the jobs and shifts that are available!

Winter Membership Drive

Give the gift of time this holiday season.

It may feel like a beautiful fall day outside, but in a few short months the depths of winter will be upon us!  Come in from the cold and make WPT part of your holiday season at our winter membership drive.  This drive will run Nov. 29-Dec. 9 and Dec. 11, 13 and 14 in our Vilas Hall studios on the UW-Madison campus.  Be part of the action at our phone bank where volunteers turn ringing phones into pledges of support.  Bring your family and friends and make it part of your annual holiday tradition.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 13th for a special live shift with award-winning chef-restaurateur, cookbook author, and television personality Rick Bayless!  (Check our online registration for additional details.)

In anticipation of the digital transition in February, we have added a few extra days to our December drive.  We are grateful for any extra assistance that you can offer.

Online registration will begin October 22nd.  Visit wpt.org/volunteer to see a listing of available shifts or to register online.

Stan Druckenmiller:  The 2008 V. Thomas Metcalfe Volunteer of the Year

Each year WPT recognizes one of our many dedicated volunteers with the V. Thomas Metcalfe Volunteer of the Year Award.  We are happy to recognize Stan Druckenmiller as our 2008 award recipient.

Stan has been an active volunteer since 1989 and first became involved with WPT through his wife Jeannie.  At his first WPT Auction, Stan volunteered as a bid sorter.  By the end of the week long fundraiser, he was promoted to training volunteers!  Today he is intimately involved in all aspects of Auction serving as an cabinet member and donor.  He has also worked for the WPT history unit, providing transcription services.  And he can occasionally be found on the phone banks at membership drives.

Thank you Stan, for your leadership, commitment and dedication to the Friends of WHA-TV and WPT.

Thank you Anna!

Anna Koob returned to WPT as assistant volunteer manager this past spring after spending time in England.  She was an invaluable asset to the volunteer office, coordinating the registration of almost 2,000 volunteers annually, handling volunteer correspondence and creatively thinking of new recruitment ideas.  Anna's expertise will be greatly missed as she pursues a new career in Chicago.  We hope to have a new assistant volunteer manager in place for the winter membership drive.

Quilt Expo the Best Ever!

391 Volunteers… 782 hands… 3910 fingers… many donning white gloves = a hugely successful fun(d) raising event for Wisconsin Public Television!  Total attendance was up this year by nearly 1500.  We certainly have a hit on our hands.

Working ‘under cover’ until next year…  September 9-12, 2009.  Save the date!  And thanks again, from the bottom of our hearts.

September Pledge Drive
Thank you to our Gold Medal Volunteers!

It happens once every four years: the summer Olympics, the Democratic and Republican conventions, and a rescheduled membership drive to September that coincides with Quilt Expo!  More than 200 dedicated volunteers stepped forward like champions and took phone pledges, served refreshments, and helped supervise the phone bank.  Our gold-medal winning volunteers brought in approximately $297,664 in pledges.

Special thanks to the following groups that brought volunteers:

Alpha Kappa Psi

BT2

Lisa's Friends

Madison Curling Club

Nancy's Notions

Twentyonezies

UW MBA Students

UW Student Personnel Association

West High School Rocket Club

Wisconsin Dept of Transportation.

Garden Expo:  Three four-hour shifts = 12

Auction:  Four four-hour shifts = 16
