World of Weeks

Kerri Gass

Beginning on friday all thoughts of exams, meetings, deadlines, and dues go out the window as Spring Break 2008 begins! We get to be carefree for a whole week and let our brains do what they do best--nothing.

But you should probably keep in mind once you return those last 8 weeks of school are going to be what some might call madness. A popular Spring tradition in the Greek community is for a fraternity or sorority to host a "week!" To many this means late nights painting banners, planning events, attending fundraisers, and doing whatever you can to win those competitions!

So how do you finish the year without losing it? Prioritize and plan ahead! When you have overlapping events or you just don't have time for it all, rank things on importance and base them on what you will actually gain from going to the event. Think about what is more beneficial, what will allow you to get more done? And don't try to do everything! It's just not possible! Organizations should sign people up to attend things ahead of time so that the same people are not attending everything!

If you can't keep up with a planner,

G-Mail also has an amazing calendar! You can color code your events according to what part of your life they apply to (ie. School, Sorority, Fraternity, Work, Personal). You can also send reminders to your email in case you forget to check your calendar.

Now that you all have an idea of how to prepare for the next few crazy weeks, here's a list of events to go fill that G-Mail calendar with! Keep in mind this calendar just includes the weeks, not individual events the groups are holding or the events other organizations are holding.

Leadership Week

Kerri Gass

Have you ever felt like all you were doing was following and that it was your time to step up and be a leader in your organization? Or maybe you are already a leader and want to improve your leadership style.

The Office of Leadership and Service is giving you that opportunity March 10th-15th. They have a week full of events and speakers for anyone interested.

The new Assistant Director of Leadership and Service, Heather Arrington, says, "Leadership week is an opportunity for the Office of Leadership and Service to highlight the many aspects of leadership through a variety of events and speakers.  We also want to create an awareness of what our office has to offer students.  We encourage students to take advantage of the many leadership and service opportunities MTSU has to offer and we hope leadership week will help to bring those to the surface for many of our students."

Greek of the Week

Todd Smith

The Greek of the week is Brian Ingram of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

Currently Brian is the Guide Right/Community Service Chair and also the chairman of the Annual Kappa Fashion Show. A portion of the proceeds from the fashion event will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

His success on the MTSU campus is not limited to his own organization. He has also headed several events to encourage campus involvement and promote student leadership skills such as a community service week with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Danny Bounds is more than willing to state how outstanding Brian has been in the past semester; “His dedication to the fraternity is priceless and his dedication to school is even more priceless.” The Greek community as a whole is a better place due to the efforts of men like Brian. Congratulations Brian on your achievements.

Spring Break Survival 2008

Kerri Gass

Since it seems like half of MTSU is headed down to the beach for Spring Break, your thoughtful writers at Letters decided to give you a little "mama and daddy" advice before you head out on your adventures! But you don't just have to be going to the beach for these to apply to you!

1. Wear your SPF!

2. DON'T drink your beverage if you leave it sitting somewhere and you take your eyes off of it.

3. DON'T go home with strangers. Even ones you think are cute enough to trust!

4. Paying for a cab is alot cheaper than getting bailed out of jail.

5. Sharks bite.

6. Remember--if it shows up on MTV someone you know is bound to see it and put it on YouTube.

7. Don't drink it unless you saw the bartender make it.

8. Tattoos aren't erasable.

Greek Awards

Todd Smith

Awards will be handed out to the Greeks that have held true to the ideals of their organizations in Tucker Theater for the annual Greek Awards ceremony on April 23rd. Being Greek is an honor, and that is some thing we should all remember, regardless of which organization you chose to join.

Mark your calendar and make sure your leaders have turned in all the forms, because Gold Standard awards as well as Greeks of the year will be announced. Remember Gold Standard is required for every organization to complete. All award application may be found online at www.mtsu.edu/~greeks and are due by March 14th at 4:30 p.m. in the the Office of Greek Affairs.  Every one should apply for something!
