Willakenzie Pinot Gris
Oregon
Was $22; SALE $18
The proprietors of Willakenzie really love the Alsatian style of Pinot
Gris (which is the same grape as Pinot Grigio): they go to great lengths to make their wines in the Alsatian mode. Alsace is located in France, on
the border of Germany, and as you may recall from long-ago history classes, has been hotly contested by all the surrounding nations for centuries.
The wines are mostly whites. Willakenzie uses Alsatian vine clones and Alsatian yeasts in creating a sophisticated wine with beautiful notes of white
peach, mango and honeysuckle. Incredibly refreshing and dry, with nice acidity and a noticeably long finish for a white.
Rusden "Bakery Hill" Cabernet Sauvignon
Barossa Valley, Australia
Was $22; SALE $20
We've still got a bit of this great, 92-point rated wine (Wine
Advocate), and it's a knockout for $20. Explosive black fruit is matched by fine acidity, smooth tannins and a luscious texture. Like Sarah
and Sparky Marquis (of the Mollydooker and Marqus Philips line), Christine and Dennis Canute are a husband-and-wife team who make seriously powerful
wines that grab your attention. Christine is a 5th generation Barossa wine-grower. Now taken over by their son Christian, they recently released the
Bakery Hill Cab as part of a value line (which gives you some sense of the prices of their regular line!). Low yield, low production wine (only 400
cases made) that shows true craft and care.
