Hear Me Speak

Dear ,

We are excited to announce that last month, I was named one of the Top Ten Women in Accounting by Women & Business.  Over the past almost twenty-five years (we'll be celebrating this fall), I have been honored by many accolades from the Greater Cincinnati area and Northern Kentucky.  It has been and is my great pleasure to serve this community in varying capacities.

As many of you know, I strive to live out my passions and values through my business.  Recently I have been speaking more about Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) and my intention is to start an even larger conversation about this topic.  It is important that we pull together and vote our conscience with our dollars.  If you are interested, please read my article "People, Planet, Profits" for further insight.

Also, please be encouraged to respond to our newsletter.  Many of you already do and I would like to extend a sincere invitation for the rest of the "Cultivating Prosperity" and "Greenie" community to join.  You will find a new section of the newsletter called "Reader Responses" for this purpose.

Create a prosperous day,

Mackey

Client Focus - Glier's Goetta

It wasn't long after Mackey started her business twenty-five years ago that Dan Glier, President of Glier's Goetta, was referred to her by his old accountant.  They began their work together as Mackey continued to expand her growing accounting firm.

When Shared CFOTM services were added to the service menu of The Advisory Team Dan had a new understanding and appreciation of his month-end numbers.  It was around this time that an exciting thing happened.  Glier's Goetta became more profitable!

Being profitable is a great feeling for a family run business such as Glier's Goetta which began its business 61 years ago after Dan's father returned from WWII.  Dan officially became President in 1977 and since then has brought a lot of enthusiasm for goetta.

Seven years ago, Dan introduced Glier's Goettafest to Greater Cincinnati.  With over twenty-five different ways to try goetta, activities for kids and adults, live music, games, plenty of shade and chairs, Glier's Goettafest is the place to be August 3-5, 2007.

Goettafest is held at Newport on the Levee.  All proceeds of the games will go to support the Women's Shelter of Covington and Welcome House.  For more information about the festival, please visit www.GoettaFest.com.  And for all things goetta and ways to get in touch with Glier's Goetta, go to www.Goetta.com.

Calling All Open Minds - People, Planet, Profits

It was 15 years ago when I made my first "green statement" by canceling the chemical treatment of my lawn.  Every spring, like clockwork, my decision was announced to the neighborhood as yellow blossoms filled my yard.

Over the years I've quit worrying about what anyone else thinks about my "green living."  For example, dandelions bless my life three ways -

    * As a beautiful display of flowers
    * Using the roots to boost my immune system
    * As a side dish of tasty greens (when sautéed with onions and balsamic vinegar)

Now, being green is the "in" thing. Ever since Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth, there are green initiatives everywhere.

I was recently on the Kroger web site, and they have a wide array of initiatives to be more green including, changing lighting to reduce electricity use, recycling programs and altering packaging to use more eco-friendly resources.

Also, I received two e-mails last week from business people who wanted to get together and find more ways to be green in their businesses.

In other good news, Congress has enacted new tax credits for solar energy and hot water heating systems, and enhancements to these credits are under consideration.

For all the attention green is getting, I was a bit disappointed last month when I gave two presentations on Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) and the total number of attendees for both sessions was nine.

Rather than see the financial world as one dimensional, geared only toward making profits, SRI sees the financial world as a three legged stool.  One leg is People, the second is Planet and third is Profits.

At its core, SRI is a process that marries rigorous financial analysis (Profits) with consideration and scrutiny of corporate practices toward the environment (Planet) and the treatment of employees (People) of the company.

If you consider yourself a "greenie" like me, then SRI is for you.  As a firm, we offer SRI individually managed portfolios and SRI 401k programs.  In both cases, when people who have an interest in moving their green impact up a notch find us, they are thrilled to know that these opportunities exist.

As I sit on my back deck, I hear the sweet sounds of the birds, watch the butterflies flit from stem to stem, and I am humbled at the beauty of a forest untouched by pesticides.  I know that I am a "greenie" - I am committed to continually alter my life choices to make a positive impact on the planet.

Join me in being a "greenie."  Invest responsibly.  Follow the "go green" tips in our newsletter.  Invite me to speak to your group about SRI.  Consciously choose what you can do to live your life with integrity and honor.  Together, let's invest in our today and our tomorrow!

Go Green - Top 10 Tips to Reduce Global Warming

This month I have pulled an article, Top Ten Tips to Reduce Global Warming from The Green Guide.  It focuses on many of the tips we have offered in past articles, such as using fans this summer and replacing incandescent bulbs with fluorescents

Below are the top ten ways consumers can cut into the 22 tons of carbon dioxide each of us produces in the United States. Take these small and not-so-small steps and you'll help ensure a more comfortable future for us all (all carbon savings are annual averages).

1) Replace five incandescent light bulbs in your home with compact fluorescents: Swapping those 75-watt incandescent bulbs with 19-watt CFLs can cut 275 pounds of CO2.

2) Instead of short haul flights of 500 miles or so, take the train and bypass 310 pounds of CO2.

3) Buy a fan, set your thermostat to 75 degrees and blow away 363 pounds of CO2.

4) Replace refrigerators more than 10 years old with today's more energy-efficient Energy Star models and save more than 500 pounds of CO2.

5) Shave your eight-minute shower to five minutes for a savings of 513 pounds.

6) Caulk, weather-strip and insulate your home. If you rely on natural gas heating, you'll stop 639 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere (472 pounds for electric heating). And this summer, you'll save 226 pounds from AC use.

7) Whenever possible, dry your clothes on a line outside or a rack indoors. If you air dry half your loads, you'll dispense with 723 pounds of CO2.

8) Trim down on the red meat. Since it takes more fossil fuels to produce red meat than fish, eggs and poultry, switching to these foods will slim your CO2 emissions by 950 pounds.

9) Leave the car at home and take public transportation to work. Taking the average U.S. commute of twelve miles by light rail will leave you 1,366 pounds of CO2 lighter than driving. The standard, diesel-powered city bus can save 804 pounds, while heavy rail subway users save 288.

10) Finally, support the creation of wind, solar and other renewable energy facilities by choosing green power if offered by your utility. To find a green power program in your state, call your local utility or visit U.S. Department of Energy's Green Power Markets page. See also our Green Power Utilities Product Report.

Practical Prosperity - Go Social, Go Now

Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is taking off in the United States.  Despite the inaccurate belief that SRI means smaller returns and is only for the political, environmental and social activist, SRI will someday be mainstream investing.

The time is now to catch the wave of prosperity and invest with consciousness.  We are in an era of green. With cars, homes, and even events, going green is the "in" thing.  Since being "green" has become en vogue, SRI investing has exploded, with over 6 new mutual fund options in 2006 alone.

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are economical ways for entry level investors to do their part to contribute to SRI.  Much smaller amounts of cash can be invested in ETFs, with lower expense fees.

The number of SRI funds and indexes has also vastly expanded and appears not to be slowing down.  New indexes that can be used as benchmarks offer investors a way to monitor their performance like never before, thus tempting greater investment in the field.

Alternative investments offer higher net worth individuals the ability to invest responsibility when hedging their portfolios, beginning new start-up companies and organizations, and investing in private business ventures.

Community investing is growing as more areas across the country have access to community investment banks that help their economies and distressed areas.  The impact some community investment banks have had in the gulf region after Hurricane Katrina has promoted their capabilities across the country.

By offering investment vehicles through large organizations like Charles Schwab, relatively small community investment banks can gain a national audience.

SRI is not just for the activist crowd.  It's for all of us!  Join the rest of the "greenies" and spare yourself feeling left out as SRI gains even more of the market.  Go social, go now!

Reader Responses

Response from V. to June's Go Green article "Air Conditioners and Alternatives":

If you open all the windows before going to sleep and then close them when you wake up (preferably before the sun gets too hot),  you do not need an air conditioner if your house is reasonably well insulated.  You can also use a little area fan if it gets to hot.
