A Century of Reverence
The first Boy Scout camp opened in Great Britain on August 1, 1907 at Brownsea Island by the
Movement’s founder Robert Baden-Powell. At 8am, he blew a Kudu horn to gather the boys that were on the island
for that camp. This August, commemorations will occur around the globe including in Great Britain at the World Scout Jamboree as
Boy Scouting enters its second century.
One of the many distinctive features of Boy
Scouting is its emphasis on a boy’s duty and reverence to God. Lord Baden-Powell, writing in Scouting for Boys (1908),
declared that “no man is much good unless he believes in God and obeys his laws. So every (Boy) Scout should have a
religion and religion seems a very simple thing: first to love and serve God; and second, to love and serve your neighbor. In
other words, we aim for the practice of Christianity in their everyday life and dealings, and not merely the profession of its theology on
Sundays…Here in this joyous brotherhood there is vast opportunity open to all in a happy work that is worthwhile because it gives every man
his chance of service for his fellow men and for God.”
In the decade that followed, Boy
Scouting’s appeal grew beyond the bounds of Christianity. Baden-Powell, writing in Aids to Scoutmastership (1919),
addressed this phenomenon by stating that “reverence to God and reverence for one's neighbor and reverence for oneself as a servant of
God, is the basis of every form of religion. The method of expression of reverence to God varies with every sect and denomination. What sect or
denomination a boy belongs to depends, as a rule, on his parents' wishes. It is they who decide. It is our business to respect their wishes and to
second their efforts to inculcate reverence, whatever form of religion the boy professes.”
|
And so, to this day, a Boy Scout is reverent toward God. He is
faithful in his religious duties and respects the convictions and beliefs of others in matters of custom and religion. Those who
do not profess faith in God cannot be Boy Scouts. And those Boy Scouts who desire to deepen their own faith are given special
opportunities to do so.
This Sunday during worship, Forrest Boylston and Miles Harbin will
receive the God and Country Award, Boy Scouting’s highest religious award for youth. This culminates nine months of
dedicated effort for each of them. Congratulations to these very special brothers in Christ!
J. Derek Harbin, priest and 38-year Boy Scout veteran

Around Beloved…The Men of Beloved will meet for fellowship at Showmars
Restaurant (Charlotte Highway/Johnston Road South) on June 18 at 7pm. We hope to see
you there!
In the last issue of Beloved eNews, we announced that a subgroup of Church of
the Beloved’s Marketing Team has been working on a website project to be launched at the beginning of the next school year
that will share information to help people who are new to Charlotte’s South Perimeter. At Church of the Beloved we remember
that Jesus, when incarnated, “took on flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood” (John 1:14a The Message) and we want to
do the same thing. We want to offer a welcome to those people who call Charlotte’s South Perimeter home and share
information that will make living here an easier task. We would like to share those tips that you would have loved to have been
told without having to discover them for yourself. This week’s question: What is your
favorite “date night” restaurant in the metro Charlotte area? What about it is special?
To respond, click here.
Want to Acolyte? Sign up this Sunday on the Acolyte Summer Team calendar (posted in the worship
area) for the Sunday(s) that you would like to serve. The only requirement is to be baptized and able to accomplish the duty you
choose (cross carrier, torch bearer, or gospel book bearer). The regularly scheduled teams will return when school begins in
August. Want to present the Bread, Wine and Water? Or pass the Offering Baskets? Please email Miss Shari who coordinates these ministries.
During the summer months, there will not be regularly scheduled people to perform these necessary ministries; please let Miss Shari know on
what Sunday you will serve so she doesn’t have to recruit on Sunday morning as worship begins.
Summer FaithQuest At the request of the children who participate in FaithQuest, there will be an opportunity to gather
for six or nine Tuesdays in the summer (beginning June 19 – August 28). Miss Jennifer (Sanders) and Miss Jennye (Knox) will
provide the leadership for those children age 3-9. Fees: six sessions $45 nine sessions $65 with a $5 discount for those already
registered for next fall’s FaithQuest. Registrations for the next academic year are now being accepted for
those children ages 3-14 with an enrollment discount of $25 for those who register by July 1 for the full year (and a discount of $15 for those who
enroll for the first 15-week term). Please see the Beloved Garden website for more information. Enrollment forms are available on Sundays in the Hospitality area or at the
Garden.
Summer Fellowship
Opportunity: Please join the Beloved Community at (Christian Radio Station) 91.9's"Faith,
Family and Freedom Celebration" featuring the bands Mercy Me, Salvador, Todd Agnew and Jose Zayas (with fireworks following the concert) on
Saturday, June 30 at the Knights Castle in Fort Mill, SC. The Concert begins at 6pm and the gates will open at 5pm.
The Fellowship Team proposes sitting together as a group in the $15 seats so they will need to know if you would like to be
part of the fun pretty quickly so the group isn't spread out in seats all over the stadium. Please email Annette Stephenson here and let her know how many tickets she should purchase for your household
by June 17. You may pay for your reserved seats over the next two Sundays before or after worship or by mailing a check to Annette.
(If you are later unable to go to the concert, you will still be responsible for the payment of your reservation. The church does not want to lose
money on this event!) Several on the Fellowship Team will be gathering for a "tail gate" picnic in the parking
lot at 4pm; if you'd like to be part of this group, please let Annette know as well so the team can figure out how to park the participating cars
close together. If you have any questions, please speak with Annette as the contact person for the Fellowship Team. The Fellowship
Team is excited about this event and hopes that there will be a large turnout for this summer fellowship event. Please watch the eNewsletter for other
events happening after school begins again!!
Beloved
eNews will publish less frequently through the summer months.
Publication dates are set for July 5, July 19, August 2 & August 16. Weekly publication will resume on August
23. News and calendar information should be submitted via email by the Monday preceding the publication date.
Church of the Beloved’s Development Office at Beloved Garden will be closed June
25-29.
