Q: How do I take care of my investment in my wardrobe?
A. I am frequently asked this question. When I deliver a new client's first garment, I generally discuss
wardrobe care. Here are some tips:
1. Hang up your clothes after each wearing. High performance natural fibers will shed
wrinkles and retain their shape if taken care of properly. Be sure to hang up your suit, sport coat, or trouser as soon as you take them off. Hang
your trousers by the cuffs, to allow the wrinkles to fall out.
2. Give your clothes a rest. A suit has a life of approximately 200 - 250 wearings. Maintain
a wardrobe so you wear a suit once a week or less. Set up a rotation system, so you wear each garment on a regular basis.
3. Proper Storage. Give your garments enough space to "breathe", at least 6" apart. Never
store garments in plastic bags, except when they come direct from the cleaners.
4. Dry Cleaning. Dry cleaning is a chemical process that breaks down fibers over time. Unless
a garment is soiled, clean it only once or twice a year. Use a dry cleaner that will press your garment on a utility press without steam
preparation.
5. Seasonal Examination. Clean out your closet at the beginning of each season to eliminate
unnecessary items.
