New Test Promises Early, Early
Detection
According to a March
13 article in the Philadelphia Inquirer and an online edition of the journal Nature Medicine, University of Pennsylvania scientists have developed a
promising new blood serum test to detect "markers" for certain cancers. This revised version of an existing blood serum test would make it
possible to be tested for hundreds of diseases long before you exhibit any symptoms.
Once this test is widely available, which is expected
within the next ten years, it will have dramatic effects on improved treatment for cancer patients.

above with his mother Jacquie, planned, directed, and danced in the recital which benefited the PBCC. Because of his dedication and

INCOME TAX CHECK-OFF FUNDING FOR
RESEARCHERS
Are you a breast or cervical cancer researcher looking for additional research monies? Grants are available
through Pennsylvania's Breast and Cervical Cancer Research Fund. So far over $1,700,000 was raised for grants thanks to the
PBCC's Income Tax Check-Off. Over forty Pennsylvania researchers at fourteen institutions have received grants for peer-reviewed studies to
address the incidence and mortality of breast and cervical cancer. Only researchers who have applied for funding to national organizations
(American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, Department of Defense and Susan G. Komen Foundation) and had their proposals peer-reviewed but
not funded are eligible for Pennsylvania research support. The funding provided through the check-off is designed to provide bridge
funding to assist the researchers in addressing any concerns identified through the peer review process. The researchers will then be able
to resubmit their applications for national funding and improve their chances of being funded. For more information about the available grants and how the
grant application process works, click here.
