Self-Injury and

Self-Destructive Behaviors

K.R. Juzwin, Psy.D.

Director, Self-Injury Recovery Service

Self-destructive behaviors have many forms, such as cutting, burning, biting, bruising, self-poisoning, and intentionally harming or neglecting one's welfare.  Among children and teens, the rate of self-destructive behaviors in the hospital admissions has increased to 13.2% between 1999 to 2000, with an increasing number of children under 10 being seen (Claassen, et.a., 2006; Olfson, et.al., 2005).  Studies estimate rates of 4% among military recruits, 14-21% among high school students, 17-35% among undergraduate students, 19% among males in maximum security prison, and nearly 38% among individuals over the age of 60 who died by suicide. (Gratz, 2001; Hawton & Harriss, 2006; Jackson, 2000; Klonsky, et.al., 2004; Whitlock, et. al., 2006).  Read More.

Emo & Goth

Teenage Fad or Warning Sign?

So your teenager comes home with purple hair, has started wearing black clothes and nail polish, and may be locking themselves in their room listening to music that sounds gloomy and is depressing.  Is this something to worry about?  Or is it just a "phase" your adolescent is going through --- a means of "self-expression".  Read More.
