Comedy, Queens, Fine Dining, and Antiques -  antidotes to the January doldrums

As the song says, “another one bites the dust”.   How did January get here so darn fast again?   It’s back to routines and resolutions (some broken already) and the ringing in of the “new” part of the New Year seems already forgotten.   Now The Three Tomatoes are not big on New Year’s resolutions (see sentence two) because they’re usually about not doing something.  We much prefer the “new” part of the New Year’s thing as in new adventures.  For example, this year we definitely resolve to make the time to read more books and you’ll be hearing about an exciting new idea for other book lovers soon too.  And because every year we like to learn something new, we have resolved to take ballroom dancing lessons (although we will have to recover from our little skiing accident first -- and no, we were not drinking martinis at the time, but they did help with the recovery).   And we resolve to resist the temptation to hibernate for all of January.  And lucky for us, because there are so many fun things to do this month that those of you who are heading to warm and sunny destinations are actually going to be envious of those of us who will be right here in the Big Apple.

Laugh in the New Year with The Three Tomatoes

What better way to kick off the year than by joining us on January 17th at The Three Tomatoes Broadway Comedy Event for an evening of food (catered by the Carnegie Deli), libations (wine, beer, and a special 3T martini, but of course), and entertainment (featuring three fun comics).  And help a great cause too.  We will hold a raffle and a silent auction to benefit The ComedyCures Foundation.  100% of the raffle and silent auction proceeds will be donated to this terrific organization along with $5.00 from the sale of each VIP ticket.  And by the way, our VIP tickets which include fabulous goody bags and a VIP after-party are almost sold out. To find out more about the event and to purchase tickets, visit our event page.  We can’t wait to see you there!

A Once in a Lifetime event with The Three Queens

As if The Three Tomatoes event weren’t enough, for the first and last time all three of the Cunard ships – the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2), and the new Queen Victoria are expected to meet in the waters off Lower Manhattan on the evening of Jan. 13, with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop and fireworks at 7PM to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event.  The Queen Victoria was just christened on Dec. 10th, by the Duchess of Cornwall, aka Camilla Parker Bowles (Mrs. Prince Charles).  The new ship embarks Jan. 6 along with the QE2 for its trans-Atlantic crossing.  The Queen Elizabeth 2 is expected to be retired from service later in 2008.  Cunard is building a new Queen Elizabeth for a 2010 launching.   After Victoria and the QE2 arrive in New York, they will rendezvous with the QM2, which home ports in Brooklyn.

The display can be viewed from the parks in Lower Manhattan including Battery Park.  But if you want to view it up close and personal, you can book a special four-hour cruise that departs South Street Seaport's Pier 16 at 4 PM returning at 8 PM aboard the Zephyr. Tickets are $125, including cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.  The cruise is sponsored by the South Street Seaport Museum; details are at their web site  or 212-748-8786.  Okay, so it’s not a cruise on the QE2, but it should be pretty darn fun.

Restaurant Week and Sunday Stays

Another reason to love January in NYC is that you can actually get a reservation at all those places you’ve been trying to get into all year long -- and not at the 5 PM or 10 PM seating either.    And add to that, Restaurant Week, which is now actually two weeks (January 21-25 and January 28 to Feb. 1) during which you get three-course prix-fixe dining ($24.07 for lunch; dinner for $35.00) at over 200 restaurants.  You’ll find the full listing at NYC & Company and links to Open Table to make booking easy.  And then there’s NYC Sunday Stays  a new program in tandem with restaurant week that gives you a City Sunday at one of many hotels including both Ritz-Carltons, offering discount rates and special value-added amenities. Take advantage of room rates reduced from 20–30% combined with room upgrades, discounted room service and restaurant dining, complimentary breakfast and more.

The Winter Antiques Show celebrates its 54th year

Another event that makes January in NYC something to look forward to is The Winter Antiques Show , which this year will display nearly 100 Shaker artifacts from The Shaker Museum and Library in Old Chatham, New York from  January 18-27 at the Seventh Regiment Armory.  This is the first major exhibition of a Shaker collection in New York City in more than a decade.

The Winter Antiques Show is America’s most prestigious antiques show, featuring 75 renowned experts in American, English, European and Asian fine and decorative arts.  All net proceeds from the Show benefit East Side House Settlement.  For more information visit their website .  General admission to the Show is $20, which includes the Show’s award-winning catalog.

Well there you have it.   A month full of comedy, queens, fine dining, and antiques.   It just doesn’t get any better than that.

‘til next week,

Low Fat, or Sugar Free? Healthy Snacking…a tomato recently wrote to our nutritionist expert and chiropractor,  Dr. Loretta Friedman to ask which snack foods are the healthiest, low-fat or low-sugar?  Dr. Friedman says the problem is this: most snack foods that are low in fat usually have excess sugar. Fat gives texture, and when the texture is removed, sugar is often added to provide texture and extra flavor.  So it's better to buy snack foods that are low in sugar, high in fiber and have a moderate amount of fat.  It’s sugar and carbohydrates that contribute to coronary heart disease, cholesterol problems and diabetes.  You can meet Dr. Friedman and several other sponsors in person at our Broadway Comedy Night.
