Change
The days are getting darker and the colors are getting brighter. In almost every situation that involves change, a positive and negative aspect will emerge. To ease the tension involved with change, focus on the benefits rather than the inconveniences.

GREETINGS
Everybody participating in student leadership has a story about how they first became involved. Recently, the journey of how John Bieker became the ASB adviser at Battle Ground High was shared with me. I found John's story inspiring. His writing is also full of rich metaphors and concepts that a student leadership team can use to better understand themselves and the students they are serving.

ACTIVITIES AND TIMELY TIPS

Things to Celebrate in November
Nov. 5-9: Kid's Goal Setting Week
Have each student write a personal goal on Monday and seal it in an envelope to carry with him/her all week. On Friday, celebrate the accomplishment of these goals. To lead by example, the staff can publicly set goals and discuss how they are doing achieving them.

Nov. 6: Saxophone Day
Begin morning announcements with Saxophone music and find a way to highlight the saxophone players in your school's music program.

Nov. 11: Veterans' Day

Look through these Veterans' Day ideas and resources to begin planning a memorable observance.

Nov. 12-18: World Kindness Week
Encourage students and staff to commit random acts of kindness for each other.

Nov. 12-18: Children's Book Week
Hold a gently used children's book drive or organize older students to read books to elementary students.

There is a certain relief in change, even though it be from bad to worse!  As I have often found in traveling in a stagecoach, that it is often a comfort to shift one's position, and be bruised in a new place."
