us) and the links to the PJ's that wick web site, www.rickandjune.com didn't work. Sorry to crowd your inboxes, but since several of you emailed to let us know, we

The Boynton Beach Club proves there's still life after sixty; plus PJ's that wick
Last week we got a phone call from a tomato in training who told us about a movie preview she had just attended at
the Paris Theater in New York
City. "It's a movie about a group of people who live in a retirement area of Florida who are over 60 and still thinking about
love, romance and dating", said our young friend to whom sixty must no doubt seem ancient, but she continued with "I loved this
movie." And the director, Susan Seidelman, was at the screening and talked about how she had so much trouble originally
getting the film distributed because the prevailing wisdom was who wants to see a movie about 60 something's dating and
more. Well earlier this week, The Three Tomatoes with husbands in tow, headed over to the Paris Theater (which is across
the street from the Plaza on 58th Street just West of Fifth Avenue) and one of the last of the
wonderful old art film movie theaters left in the City to check out The
Boynton Beach Club for ourselves.
We laughed and we cried
Including our cranky husbands whom we had dragged away from "baseball on the tube" and who were laughing out loud in spite of
themselves. This is an absolutely delightful romantic and poignant comedy that just happens to be about people
over sixty. The story revolves around five people living in an active adult community in Boynton Beach, Florida.
They meet at a bereavement group and soon find themselves, after many decades of married life in the "dating
game". And what a cast. Joe Bologna, who's been a long time favorite of ours is hysterical as the
"seasoned" widower, and then there's the still incredibly handsome and attractive Michael Nouri (remember Flash Dance?).
Dyan Cannon and Sally Kellerman who are both almost 70 and still look amazing although clearly both have had some "surgical help" and no
longer have a lot of facial expressions, are very fun. And kudos to Sally for flashing her great looking assets.
But our favorites were Brenda Vaccaro and Len Cariou (Tony award winner for Sweeny Todd). Brenda, who has had no
"work" done and is about fifty pounds overweight is so real, and absolutely fabulous in this movie. And Len, in a "romantic"
lead role is funny, delightful and well, very romantic.
The story behind the story
Boynton Beach Club was inspired by
the many encounters that first time producer, Florence Seidelman had after moving to an "active adult community" in South Florida and is directed by
her daughter, Susan Seidelman, whose credits include Desperately Seeking Susan.
"I was interested in making a film that portrayed older people in a more real and contemporary
way", says Susan. "I wanted characters that were vibrant . Times are changing and as the head end of the original Baby Boomer generation now
approaches retirement age, the concept of what it means to be older needs to be updated."
To which The Three Tomatoes say hold your martini glass up high and shout hooray to Susan and Florence,
