New & Exciting Cabernets
Now that it's getting really cold, turn to big, bold reds to keep you
warm. We just got a couple in that will do that trick.
Green Lion Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa, California -
$20
The brand-new Green Lion brand marks Australian superstar winemaker Chris
Ringland's first foray into California wine. You may be familiar with his other projects: Pillar Box Red, Le Corte, Bitch, and Evil, amongst others.
This wine has the same bright, extracted fruit that fans of his wines will recognize, but with that distinctive Napa style. You won't be able to
miss the trippy, Oz-ish labels. We also have their Merlot in stock ($18).
Rusden "Bakery Hill" Cabernet Sauvignon - Barossa Valley,
Australia - $22
Awarded 92 points from Aussie-phile critic Robert Parker. Let's talk about
Parker for a sec. He made his name in the mid-late 80s, and was a huge fan of Bordeaux and Burgundy. In other words, old school French stuff. As of
late, however, his highest marks have consistently gone to Australian wines. If that doesn't make you take Australian wine seriously, at least try
some of these highly-rated efforts for yourself.
This Cab
exhibits a taut mass of black and red fruit with slightly minty undertones. Great structure and mouth presence.
Foris Cabernet Franc - Rogue Valley, Oregon -
$20
Ahh, good old Cab Franc. The forgotten Cab. It's the holiday season - take
pity on overlooked grapes and give this delicious wine a try. A bit earthier and a touch lighter than its Sauvignon counterpart, but with nice tannic
structure and stylish red fruits. Cab Franc is most often seen starring in the wines from the right bank of Bordeaux, as well as in the red wines of
the Chinon and Bourgieul regions of the Loire Valley.
Ongoing Sales
Chateau Pesquie "Quintessence" - Cotes du Ventoux,
France - was $24;
remains a steal at $17!
Rich, complex, and rewarding. 80% Syrah, 20% Grenache. Tastes like a baby
Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
Este - Almeria, Spain - was $11; on sale for
$9
A blend of Monastrell (Mourvedre), Tempranillo and Grenache (the
cornerstones of Spanish red wine), this is a good choice for easy, every-day drinking or parties. Medium bodied with lots of bright strawberry fruit,
backed by black cherry and blackberry. Our wholesaler is out, so what we've got is it . . . then it's "Adios!"
The Show Cabernet Sauvignon - California - was $17, still
on sale for $14
A great gift idea, as it's a wine that's pretty universally
drinkable and showcases the very-Nashvillian Hatch Show Print on its labels.
