Got Gardens?
Garden photos, that is. We want our new California Chapter website to
be a dynamic and beautiful place to show our visitors YOUR creativity
and
talent.
We're looking for any kind of
garden image you would like to submit, including landscape portraits,
garden details, plant close-ups, lovely
pathways... Anything you think would enhance the professional look of
our website.
If you are a California Chapter member, and you are willing to show the
world your best work, we want to share your accomplishments with the
many
people who visit our website every day.
Photos should be authored by you, and should not contain people. Pets
are ok! (It's not that we don't think people belong in gardens, but we
are
concerned about releases, etc.) If there are identifying
characteristics which would reveal the location of the garden- or might
identify the garden
owner to anyone with a discerning eye- please seek permission from the
garden owner before submitting your photo(s).
Please give each photo a unique title
including your name or initials to help us with the sorting process,
i.e.,
"Jones_Rose". We encourage you to send your photos in the highest
quality possible, but to avoid clogging the recipient's email, please
avoid sending
more than 8 Megabytes per email. Choose
to send multiple emails rather than one big one if your files are
large. (If this is not possible, please contact Sharon Gibson, sbgi@att.net, to arrange to send the photos
on CD.)
The maximum number of submissions per member for this round is 5 per member. We will continue
to collect photos at
various times throughout the year, so if you
have more to share next time, even better!
The deadline for the first round of submissions is December 31, 2006. Please send your photos to Sharon Gibson, sbgi@att.net
2007 Newsletter Submission
Dates
By Li Vellinga
With our new and improved newsletter layout, we invite you to submit
articles for consideration. Appropriate subjects include questions,
suggestions,
sharing of fun or interesting APLD experiences (as seen above in the
great article by Marcia Bloom), upcoming events, or anything else you
feel would
be worthwhile to mention.
For instance, if you've
received an award or industry recognition, please share it as it would
encourage others to do the same. As a group, it'll give us recognition
and serve to raise our industry standards. Or, if you know of a fellow
designer who has accomplished something special, please let us know. We
also welcome tips and tricks of the trade that will help all of us in
our
businesses. It can be a small notice about a specific software program
you find useful, or a more in-depth story as the fabulous information
about
the Peninsula Yahoo! Group, submitted by John Black for the October
newsletter.
As always, you can submit an article or a calendar event any time of the month. Starting January 2007,
the deadline for newsletter submissions will always be on the 25th of each month.
Do you Know
the Way to Ipe?
You've come up with a great idea for a deck, and you want to specify a material you've
never worked with- Ipe. You've heard that it can be hard to work with... Hmmm.... What about asking the folks on the Members-Only California Chapter
Yahoo! Group?
This month, one of our members did just that, and was rewarded with tips from other designers
experienced with the ins-and-outs of Ipe, including recommendations of contractors with Ipe installation know-how.
Join the dynamic and informative discussion happening every day on the California
Chapter Yahoo! Group!

APLD California Chapter December 2006 Newsletter
What a Wonderful Day:
Watsonville Field Trip Rewards Happy Wanderers!
By Marcia Bloom
On Friday, October 27th, thirty-three APLD members from the Peninsula, North Bay and East Bay
districts gathered at the Page Mill Park 'n Ride to embark on a day-long journey to explore various garden resources in the Watsonville area.
We started the day with a tailgate of hot coffee and muffins, and then loaded onto a luxury tour bus to begin our trek. Laura Schaub prepared a
very useful map in VectorWorks, showing all of our stops as well as other local attractions that people might want to know about for future visits to
the area. (For a copy of this terrific resource map click here!)
In the morning, we visited Pottery Planet and Soquel Nursery in
Soquel, then headed to Native Revival
Nursery in Aptos before enjoying a BYOB picnic lunch at tables scattered throughout the inspiring display gardens of drought-tolerant plants
at
Sierra Azul Nursery. Following lunch, Jeff Rosendale gave us a tour of the nursery and took us into the propagation houses to
see some of his
developmental work. By this time, it was quite hot and we were thankful for the reprieve of the air conditioned bus that carried us to our next
stop, Suncrest Nurseries in Watsonville. Here, Nevin Smith greeted us and gave us an overview of the extensive growing grounds
which extended as
far as we could see.
At each stop, the mood was one of anticipation and excitement as we wandered through the nurseries,
bought catalogs or reference books, and wrote down new varieties to contemplate using in our next project. I think we all learned about some
new plants and enjoyed sharing our knowledge with each other. Toward the end of the day, several people and I shared a similar sentiment -
despite the extensive plant knowledge we each may have, there is still so much more to learn and that is part of what makes our profession so
exciting and challenging at the same time!
By the end of the day, the bottom compartments of the bus were filled with purchased treasures of plants and pots, while the top of the bus was
filled with exhausted landscape designers. We were definitely ready for our final stop of the day, Garden Accents in Gilroy,
where we quickly
forgot how tired we were once we started to wander through the magnificent display gardens, enjoying a cool breeze, the soothing sounds of water from
an incredible fountain selection, a catered buffet of delicious hors d'oeuvres, and a cocktail bar offering a selection of martinis,
lemon drops,
cosmopolitans, wine and beer. Our members felt very honored and appreciative of the extra effort the owners and staff took to welcome APLD, and
there was definitely a happy buzz of chatter to be heard on the bus ride home.
Gail Klein wrote the following note to me afterwards, which sums up the day quite well. "The company, the nurseries/shops and the weather
combined to make the trip both enjoyable and very useful. I feel it deepened ties to each other, maybe increased a sense of community among
us. It is an experience we won't forget for a long time. I think it's been the best this year!"

New North Bay District
By Gail Fanning
A new APLD District has been formed to include the North Bay counties of Marin, Sonoma, and Napa (formerly part of the San Francisco District).
If you are a landscape designer or student in any of these counties, you can now enjoy educational meetings and professional support closer to
home! The schedule of meetings for 2007 includes an all-day nursery and supplier tour, a design forum for sharing ideas and problem-solving
with other designers, a meeting with local landscape contractors, and a certification workshop. To receive notification of meeting dates and
place, please e-mail ceciliahuber@comcast.net.

San Francisco Flower & Garden Show- Opportunities Still Available
Show Producer, Kay Estey, announces still-available opportunities to participate in the 2007 San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, a world-class event
drawing up to 60,000 participants. The show runs from March 21st to March 25th, 2007.
First; contractors are being sought to co-create a show garden with Garden Design Magazine. The selected contractor will be listed as an equal
partner and will receive substantial publicity across three issues of the magazine. Second; two garden creators are still being sought. Those who
create gardens for the show do so to promote their business, increase name recognition, and demonstrate their talents. To them, the show is viewed as
a way of increasing sales and moving up a level, even in a tough economic climate.
There are many changes in the public relations, marketing, guidance, and procedures of the show, which will assist garden creators even more. The
2007 theme is "Living & Loving the Garden Life". For more on these opportunities, contact Kay Estey at kay@gardenshow.com or call her at 415-771-6909.
