School Description: Bronx Community Charter School (BxC) was founded by local educators who joined with community members and local parents to create an educational alternative in the north central Bronx. The school vision is grounded in the belief that children learn best when they are active participants in their own learning. Our students will raise questions about the world around them, engage with a wide range of materials, and learn through their interactions with each other and all of the adults in the school community.  An important feature of the school will be engagement in the community around us.  Curriculum will be enhanced through work with local organizations, such as the Bronx River Alliance and the Department of Environmental Protection.  Instruction will center around the workshop model that allows for both direct instruction and large blocks of time for individual and collaborative student work. The school will also feature visual and performing arts.

School Description: Green Dot New York Charter School will open with 100 students in 9th grade and will eventually expand to all high school grades. Green Dot operates 12 charter high schools in Los Angeles’ highest-need communities and has had a stellar record of achievement – 98 percent graduation rate with nearly 80 percent of seniors going to four-year universities.

 

5. Mott Haven Academy Charter School

School Description: Mott Haven Academy Charter School will open in a temporary DoE public school space for the 2008-09 school year with plans to move to its permanent home at 170 Brown Place (CSD 7) for the 2009-10 academic year. It’s partnership with the NY Foundling will allow the school to blend a rigorous academic program with an extensive series of social support services to meet the needs of the community. The school will open with 90 students in grades K-1, and eventually grow to serve 314 students in grades K-8.  Although open to all students, the school is specifically designed to serve at risk students who are currently in the foster care and child welfare system.

School Description: The New York City Charter High School for Architecture, Engineering, & Construction Industry (AECI) was founded by Richard Izquierdo Arroyo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the South Bronx Charter School for International Culture and the Arts in Community School District (CSD) 7.  AECI’s mission of is to create an integrated, rigorous academic and career preparatory learning environment that provides students with a foundation of the necessary skills, knowledge and practical experience to pursue a path leading to college and/or a career in the construction industry.  Our philosophy is that a college preparatory school that has high expectations for all students and an academically rigorous small learning environment will produce students who attain high levels of achievement regardless of ethnicity, gender, race, creed, national origin, religion or ancestry.  AECI’s educational program is designed to fully integrate core academic subjects, project-based classroom learning, and career-related field experiences. School Description: Collegiate Charter School B is the third Collegiate charter school to open in New York City as part of the Uncommon Schools network. It joins Kings Collegiate Charter School, which opened in fall 2007, and Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School (2005), one of only two NYC charter schools to have every one of its 6th graders score Advanced or Proficient on the 2006-07 state math exam. The Collegiate Schools offer a structured, college preparatory academic environment, a longer school day and longer school year, and extremely high expectations for both academics and behavior.

School Description: Carl C. Icahn Charter School Far Rockaway will be the second replication school modeled after the first Carl C. Icahn Charter School in the Bronx. The school’s main curriculum is based on the Core Knowledge Program. As with Carl C. Icahn Charter School and Carl C. Icahn Charter School Bronx North, which opened last year, the Far Rockaway school will offer a school day that runs from 8:30 am to 4 pm, Saturday classes for students who need more help, and a longer school year to ensure that students have more instructional time than their peers in traditional public schools.
