Moms in
Touch
"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the
Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Rom. 12:11-12
Moms In Touch is a gathering
of moms from all three divisions who meet in Shropshire Commons Room (in Wesley Hall) at 8:10 am for an hour on Mondays to pray for our children,
faculty, and school. There is no requirement for attending a Moms In Touch meeting other than the desire to pray for your child.
Please come as often or as infrequently as you’d like, and know that your willingness to pray will bless your community in deep ways. If you
cannot make the meetings but still wish to pray with us, or for more information, please contact Karen Guess at kguess@comcast.net or Lori Coxhead at
coxhead1@juno.com. You are welcome
to join us on Monday.

GRANDPARENTS’ AND SPECIAL
FRIENDS’ DAY
Grandparents’ and Special
Friends’ Day for K-6 grade students is just around the corner—Tuesday, November 25th,
2008. If you have not yet returned your RSVP form,
please deliver it to your child’s homeroom teacher, as they are due by Friday, November 7th,
2008. These forms are to be completed by the parents (not the Grandparents!) and only ONE
RSVP form per family should be submitted. These forms are essential in making final preparations to
welcome our special guests.
LOWER
SCHOOL
Registration in the Lower School will begin at 12:15 p.m. Upon arrival, guests will be greeted outside by
the sounds of the Tone Chimes and Choristers. They will be directed to Grace Gymnasium for
registration, light refreshments and individual performances by students from the Lower School Music Program. Guests will
next move into Bowen Dining Hall at 12:50 p.m. for a performance and brief remarks by Zach Young, will begin
promptly at 1:00 p.m. in Bowen Dining Hall. Joy Wood will then dismiss our guests to visit the students’ classrooms
around 1:30 p.m. If you have more than one child at Wesleyan, you may consider directing your grandparents or special friends to
divide their time and visit both students’ classrooms. To aid in this transition, an announcement will be made halfway
through classroom visitations so that your guests can “switch” classes.
Our Wesleyan parents are welcome to
join us for our Lower or Middle School presentations, but please reserve seating for our grandparents and special friends in Bowen Dining Hall, as
seating there is limited.
MIDDLE
SCHOOL
Registration in the Middle School
will begin at 12:30 p.m. Guests will be greeted in Adler Plaza, where they will be directed to Powell Theater to
meet their 5th and 6th grade students and receive their nametags. Once seated in Powell Theater,
guests will be treated to a performance at 1:00 p.m. by the Wesleyan Middle School Band and the Middle School Chorale. Following the performance at approximately 1:25 p.m., Zach Young will give a brief
update on Wesleyan. Ramona Blankenship will then dismiss our guests for light refreshments and classroom visits beginning at
2:00 p.m.
BOTH LOWER AND MIDDLE
SCHOOL
VERY
IMPORTANT:
If you have students in both the Lower and Middle Schools, please direct your guests to register in the Lower School (Grace
Gymnasium). Their nametags and photo buttons will be there for both the Lower School and Middle School students.
If you have only Middle School students, please direct your guests to register at the Middle
School (Powell Theater). Their nametags and photo buttons will be located there.
For those who have grandparents
visiting both Lower and Middle School students, we suggest having one grandparent visit the Lower School while the other visits the Middle
School. If they prefer to stay together, most families choose to visit the Lower School first for registration and performances by
the Tone Chime Choir, Chorus, Lower School Music Students, and Dance, then switch
to the Middle School at 1:00 p.m. for Band and Chorale performances, then back to the Lower School at 1:30 p.m. for classroom visits, and
finally back to the Middle School at 2:00 p.m. for classroom visits. Don’t worry, there will be golf carts to drive guests
back and forth!
Following classroom visits, your
children may take their guests on a personal tour. Your children are welcome to leave with their guests at the completion of their
activities. They are not required to stay until 3:00 p.m.
Your guests will be able to park on
campus. There will be limited handicapped parking available in the Lower School lot. There will be golf carts to
transport guests between the Lower School and Middle School. There will be a limited number of wheelchairs
available for those who need special assistance.
Volunteers and parents WILL NOT be
allowed to park in the Lower School lot. You must park at the Annex or at the Natatorium. We appreciate your
cooperation in reserving parking spaces for our guests.
As a final reminder, our Lower School children will
be having sack lunches in their homerooms prior to the Grandparents’ Day festivities. No
lunch will be served in Bowen Dining Hall, and there will be no lunchtime visitation on Tuesday, November 25th, 2008.
Thank you to all of the parent
volunteers, teachers, administration and staff who work together to make Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day such a special
occasion! Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the following:

Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child
Beginning Monday, November 3rd, all three divisions (LS, MS, and HS) are collecting shoe boxes for
Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. The shoe boxes will be shipped to children all around the world who have suffered
because of war, natural disaster, poverty, illness or neglect. Please consider putting together a shoe box for a child over the next couple of weeks.
LS donations can be dropped off in Mrs. Smith’s room, Warren187. MS donations can be dropped off in Mrs. Schofield’s room, Wesley 150,
or Ms. Wanders’ room, Wesley 280. HS donations can be dropped off outside Mrs. Pack’s office, Wesley 161. The last day to bring in your
donations is Friday, November 14th. For more information about preparing a shoe box, please go to the Serve His League web page on the Wesleyan web
site where you will also find a complete list of Serve His League projects, http://www.wesleyanschool.org/life/christianlife/servehis/Pages/Projects.aspx
News from Health Services
Illnesses: At this time of the year, we are seeing students in the Infirmaries with symptoms of strept
throat, viral infections, conjunctivitis, and colds. A few students in the high school have also been diagnosed with mono. If your child has been
diagnosed with anything serious or contagious, we would like you to take a minute and contact the Infirmary, so that we may be aware of these
illnesses. It will help us in our assessment and treatment of other students. We realize that you are already contacting the Administrative Assistants
regarding your child’s absence from school, but the reason for the absence is not reported to us. You may call us at #2136 for LS Infirmary;
#2259 for MS/HS Infirmary, or e-mail us at schoolnurses@wesleyanschool.org. We are always glad to work with you and your child once they return to school following a long illness or surgery, should
they need medicine or simply a place to rest for a brief time during the school day.
When to return to school after illness: In order to
decrease spread of illness among students who have been out sick, we ask that you please refer to the Family Handbook, page 43 for specific
information.
Flu shots:
Now is the time to start thinking about flu season and protecting you and your family from the flu. Local Pediatric offices are
already starting to see children with the flu. Flu shots are widely available, as is the Flu Mist. Please check with your healthcare
provider to schedule your flu vaccine. Feel free to check the following CDC website for further information: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/
- Students with Asthma: If your child
has asthma and needs to use an inhaler occasionally, please make sure that we have one as back- up in the infirmary for their use. While MS/HS
students are permitted to carry their own inhalers in their PE bags, we realize that sometimes they do not always have them when they need them. It is
best to make sure that the nurses are aware of any order for an inhaler and ideally to have one in the infirmary. If your student develops an asthma
attack while at school and we have no inhaler here to use, then 911 is summoned. We would rather be prepared with an inhaler when
one is needed.
Please remember, we are here to help your students
stay healthy and stay in school. If there is anything we can do for your children please let us know. We are here for you.
Troop 1963
News
October was an exciting and busy month for the guys
of Troop 1963! We started the month with a 17-mile paddle down the Chattahoochee River in canoes and kayaks with an overnight campout along the
river. A few guys found out that the river is REALLY COLD! It was a great time and great exercise, too!
We then held our 1st annual "Yard Sale" in which we
collected gently used sports equipment and clothing to re-sell. The guys worked by putting together the racks, setting up the concession stand,
hauling clothes, and acting as human advertisements! They found out that work is pretty fun when doing it with friends! Thanks to everyone in
the Wesleyan community who supported this fundraiser.
We ended the month with a wrap-up of our annual
Popcorn sale. If you didn't get a chance to get some delicious Boy Scout popcorn, email Scott Murphy(DSMurphy@dsmurphy.com) or contact any scout to get some
while supplies last!
We're off to tackle Blood Mountain, the highest
peak in GA along the Appalachian Trail, on Nov. 1st! This is our 1st training hike in preparation for our Philmont journey in June of
2009.
Troop 1963 is open to any boys aged
11-17. For information about joining, contact Scoutmaster Bo Laughlin(Bo@cyberdusters.com) or Committee Chair Meg Brooks(megbrooks001@comcast.net) or come for a visit to
our Monday meetings in the Scout Hut at the Annex, 7-8:30.
Wesleyan’s Blood Drive February 12, 2009
Please mark your calendar and plan to give blood on February 12th. Parents, students (age 16 and over) faculty
and friends are all welcome. Sign-ups will begin in January.

LS Bible Blast
November’s core virtue: “Uniqueness” –
learning more about others so you can know more about yourself.
Memory verse: “There are different kinds of gifts. But
they are all given by the same Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:4.
Service Opportunity: Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes –
November 3-14th.
LS Bible has been emphasizing the importance of service in our communities
with the many opportunities available to us to give. Our support to others in need is Christ-like and he speaks of this in one of the parables
“The Good Samaritan.” We learned that a parable is an earthly story with a heavenly message. We can help others like the Samaritan helped the Jewish man.
“Book Character Day” took us to another parable, The Sunflower
Parable. Each year, the Lower School participates in “Book Character Day.” Students and teachers dress in the character of
their favorite book, and travel room to room as teachers read their favorite book. The grand finale is a parade of characters around
the campus for all the school to see. We had a great time!
As the fourth graders learn the books of the Old Testament and Psalm 23 by
memory, Kindergarten through 3rd grade forge forward in the studies of the lineage of Abraham, God’s preparation of Moses for the Exodus, and becoming more acquainted with their bibles by having a
“Scavenger Hunt of the Bible.”
Remember, all are welcome to join us for Chapel, Wednesday 9am in Austin
Chapel.
First Grade Parents: Gala Auction
Dear 1st grade & kindergarten parents, Since the 1st grade parents and kindergarten parents have not been to
a Wesleyan auction, I have had some questions about it. Those of you with older siblings can just delete this, as you are already familiar with
the auction.
The Auction is put on by the Wesleyan Parents Club every two years. It is a major fundraiser for the WPC. The
last auction in 2007, raised $630,034!!!! It also involves a lot of wonderful volunteers, time and funds from our parents, teachers, community,
and administration. This year it will be at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead. It is a lovely formal event with a great dinner and this
year, a band!
The Auction committee collects hundreds of items (last year over 600) to auction off at the event. There is a silent
and live auction. Some parents and teachers choose to attend (ticket information to come soon) and soon choose to volunteer. Both are
helpful to the WPC.
The "Grow the Garden Dinners" are held this time of year to begin collection of items. See the last Update for
information. These dinners are a great way to contribute an item for the auction. You receive a fun evening with friends and free dinner
in return! Your item doesn't have to be extravagant. It can be a week at the beach in your condo or a $100 gift certificate to a
restaurant. Also note, that donated items are tax deductible at the fair market value of the item. You keep your donation form as a
receipt. (Items you purchase at the auction are deductible only after the fair market value point of the item.) Tickets are not tax-deductible
since you will be receiving a nice dinner and party in return.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the "Grow the Garden
Dinners" and this important event. It's not too late to sign up for a dinner on Nov. 8. Hope to see you at dinner! Blessings,
Darcy Copeland
Christmas
Ornament
Attention: Middle School
Students – In keeping with tradition at the school, we are asking that all new students bring in a
non-breakable Christmas ornament. Please print the student’s name and graduation year on the ornament.
These decorations will be placed on the Christmas trees that will be in the middle school cafeteria, library and office and will follow your
child throughout their years at Wesleyan.
We would like all students to be a part of the
Wesleyan tradition. Please turn in your ornament in the wrapped box in the middle school office by November 10th,
2008. If you have any questions, please contact Michele Williams at michelewilliams@bellsouth.net
or Laura Thurston at mlthurston@bellsouth.net.

Varsity Volleyball
The varsity volleyball team
finished another highly successful season with a record of 47-8. The second ranked Wolves season was cut short in a tough sectional final loss
to top ranked Westminster 3-1. During the course of the season, the team reached the semifinals of the Sequoyah tournament, the finals of the
Brentwood Invite and won the Gwinnett County Tournament. The team also won its 8th consecutive area championship. Wesleyan won
several big matches throughout the year including two wins over #1 4A Marist, four wins over #2 4A Sandy Creek, two wins over # 2 3A Woodward and # 3
3A Columbus. Members of this years team include seniors Anne Marie Armstrong, Brooke Atkinson, Madison Boyd, and Brittany Price, juniors Haley
Collins, Anna Keappler, and Paige Lamons, sophomores Grace Leah Baughn, Alex Middleton, Wilson Sprinkle and Maggie Smith and freshmen Callie Bivings
and Alana Broe. The team was coached by Jennifer and Ted Russell, Laurel Goggans and Ken Connor and managed by Emma Bivings and Natalie
Connor.
Varsity Football
Lee Ellis and his senior teammates have been
major factors in our success this year. Lee in particular is contributing in so many crucial ways—offense, defense, and special
teams. Because of his recent effort against Athens Academy not only did Wesleyan win its first-ever region championship and position itself for
a great playoff run but Lee was recognized by the Gwinnett Daily Post as their Defensive Player of the Week. Congratulations to Lee and his
championship teammates.
Wesleyan School Athletic Pass
Wesleyan students and
families are admitted free of charge to home varsity games (with the exception of GHSA playoff games) WITH a Wesleyan Athletic Student or Family Pass.
Anyone without a Pass will charged the regular admissions price. Grandparents are always admitted free of charge, with or without a Pass. If you need
additional Passes, they are available in the Athletic Office. Faculty/staff members and their immediate families are admitted free of charge, as are
Wesleyan alumni.
Jehovah-Jireh: The
Lord is the Provider
"And my
God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus."
Philippians
4:19
The origin of this name stems from the story in
Genesis of Abraham’s response to God’s provision of the ram, in the place of Abraham’s only son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. God had
asked Abraham to take his son and sacrifice him. In an act of incredible faith, Abraham took the son given to him by God, climbed atop Mt.
Moriah and laid his son on the altar. Literally, as the knife was in the air, an angel intervened and Isaac was saved: a ram to sacrifice
in the place of his son. No doubt relieved and also a sign of Abraham’s deep understanding that God’s promise cannot fail, Abraham names
the spot Jehovah-Jireh: the Lord provides.
What is most interesting to me is God’s
response to Abraham’s obedience: “Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
There is little doubt that Abraham’s heart was pounding and his mind racing as he climbed the hill to the altar. He was about to kill his
beloved, his only son. Yet, Abraham continued to climb and act based upon his faith in the promises of God. The God that brought him a son was also
the God who promised to make Abraham’s offspring as numerous as the stars.
It seems Abraham understood that a God who held
such a promise in the form of a little boy could do nothing but fulfill that promise. Even if it made no sense in the short-term, surely the God that
tells Abraham, “through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,” is the God that will make sense of what is seemingly
senseless. As the reader knows, Abraham’s faith in God was not in vain. All nations were blessed through Abraham as God gave of
Himself that which He did not ask of Abraham: His only Son. God the Provider gave of Himself that which we truly need. From the
beginning He saw our needs, and our ultimate need, and provided for them no matter the cost. Interestingly, “Jireh” can also mean
“to see” in Hebrew which implies that God’s provision is built upon His pre-vision and ability to see our needs before we even
know them. Clearly, Abraham knew God the Provider and my prayer is that we would grow in the promise that
"…our God will meet all our
needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

Marching Band
Your Marching Wolves
represented Wesleyan well this weekend. After supporting the football team to their region title at Athens Academy, the band returned to school
on Saturday morning to prepare for competition at Collins Hill High School.
The Marching Wolves boldly competed up a
level in AA and did this as the smallest band in the competition and the only band with middle school students in the group. It turns out we have a
modern day David and Goliath remake! The marching wolves took first place out of 9 bands! We took first place in the following
captions:
- 1. Best band overall in both A and AA
- 2. Best Brass
- 3. Best Woodwinds
- 4. Best Music
- 5. Best Visual
- 6. Best Drum Major (Rachael Duane scored a 96.5!)
The band that performed right before
Wesleyan had 91 people in the band!
Bands in A and AA besides
Wesleyan:
Central Gwinnett High School
West Forsyth High School
Oconee County High School
East Jackson High School
Chapman High School (South
Carolina)
Berkmar High School
Monroe Area High School
St. Pius X Catholic High School
If that all isn’t enough, had we
competed in the AAA class, we would have placed 3rd – we were only 1 point behind Norcross High School!! They marching 150 members
and are known as one of the best bands in the Gwinnett.

There are a lot of great things going on in the Fine Arts department this fall. Attached is a calendar flyer to keep you up
to date so you can come by and see what your students are up to. We’ll also be putting up new art work soon. The new work
includes a great photography exhibit of photos that high school student Alyssa McNaughton took while participating in a National Geographic Student
Photography Expedition! Look for her work in the foyer of the Fine Arts building.
2009 Gifts in the
Garden Gala
Auction
Save the
Date! The Wesleyan
Parents Club biennial black tie event will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead. In addition to an
elegant dinner, and silent and live auctions, this year’s event will feature a fabulous live
band!
As the WPC’s
largest fund raising event, Gala Auction activities begin early in the year. Our Sponsorship and Acquisitions Committees are hard at work securing
auction items and event sponsors. Our Class Theme Basket and Class Art Project Committees have already begun
working with teachers and parents, and our Party Committee is planning the details that make this a truly special evening! All of these efforts are
being led by 2009 Gala Auction co-chairs, Kim Sutton-Adair and Frances Robertson.
Please see our web page
www.wesleyanschool.org/parents/Club/auction/pages/default.aspx for complete Gala Auction
information, forms, and opportunities for you to help make this the most successful Auction ever!

High School Parents – the Auction committee needs your help!
The Class Theme
Collections Committee is looking for a few parent volunteers from the Junior and Senior class. The theme for these baskets – which will be
available at the Auction – will be “Spring Prom”. Volunteers will solicit cash donations from their grade and use that money to
shop for items for the basket collection. Interested in helping with this fun and easy part of the Gala Auction? Please contact Meg Brooks megbrooks001@comcast.net. We need to collect money in November, so time is of the essence!
