I just saw an ad for an outdoor grill that costs…(are you ready?)..…$22,945!
That’s not a typo. The Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet Hybrid Grill actually costs
more than a new car!
Hubby Steve barbecues on a rusty ten-year-old Weber grill and, frankly, I don’t see how a $22,945 grill could possibly
improve the flavor of the salmon he grilled last night.
As my friends and family know, I don’t cook and have a sign on my stove that reads,
“For display purposes
only.”
So, I’m surprised anyone would spend that much money just to COOK!
But I don’t think they’re WRONG and I’m not criticizing a person who’d
pay thousands of dollars just for an outdoor grill.
That same person may be surprised that I’m spending thousands of dollars this fall to visit an active
volcano in Sicily!
There’s no right or wrong here. Just differences in personal priorities.
“People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness.
Just because they’re not on YOUR road doesn’t mean they’ve gotten lost.” H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
I used to be very critical and judgmental, although I called it being “highly opinionated.”
Many of my sentences began, “I don’t like the way they….” Or, "I can't stand it when...."
Or, "I hate fluorescent
lighting!"
I was constantly evaluating things as right or wrong, good or bad.
Then I realized, you can’t reap the benefits of living in The Positive Zone, (less stress and more energy), if you have a constantly critical, judgmental attitude.
As Richard Carlson wrote in Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff..,
“When we judge or criticize another person, it says nothing about
that person; it merely says something about our own
need to be critical.”
In other
words, having a constantly critical mindset is nothing to be proud of!
Although I still have strong political opinions, I now do my best to
practice non-judgment and accept people and situations exactly as they are.
Here’s your Quick Tip from The Positive Zone:
++++For the next twenty-four hours, refrain from judging anything that
occurs.
++++If that’s too difficult, try to practice non-judgment for just the next sixty minutes!
I promise, if you do this, you'll get a "peaceful easy feeling" (to quote The Eagles!)
And if you want to purchase a $22,945 outdoor grill, my only suggestion is that
you spring for the optional $320 garbage can!
Good luck and send me an email: Let me know if you've
ever found yourself being overly judgmental (or if you own a grill that costs more than $100!)
Until next month...... Keep smiling and stay in The
Zone!
