Opportunities to Participate in Research Impacting Breast Cancer

Survey Studying Support Issues & Breast Cancer.
A Purdue graduate student has asked Y-ME Illinois to alert breast cancer survivors about an opportunity to help healthcare professionals better understand coping mechanisms and support issues surrounding breast cancer. Born out of the personal experiences of the researcher and her grandmother, who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2001, the study focuses on spirituality among those facing a breast cancer diagnosis.

If interested in participating, go online to take the survey or contact the researcher, LaRay Imani Price-Abdelrazzaq, directly at 1-877-524-708, or via email at imanibaraka@msn.com.

NCI Breast Cancer Study

Women Living Longer with Inflammatory Breast Cancer Despite Rise in Incidence in the 1990s

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute has recently published an article reporting that although the incidence of inflammatory breast cancer rose during the 1990’s, survival rates improved modestly.  Inflammatory breast cancer occurs when the cancer cells block the lymph vessels of the skin. This often causes the skin of breast to become red and inflamed and may include a pitting appearance of the skin known as peau d’ orange (similar to the skin of an orange). Current treatment options for inflammatory breast cancer includes surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Read more.

Genes linked to spread of breast cancer discovered

Scientists have identified genes enabling breast cancer cells to spread to the lungs, a discovery that could improve diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The set of genes not only reveals where the cancer will spread, but also how virulent it is likely to be. The genes could be potential targets for existing or new breast cancer drugs, according to the researchers.  Read more.
