"Wellness means a healthy mind, body and soul -- this is holistic ministry," said Dr. Thomas L. Brown, senior pastor at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. "The church is not just a museum for people to come praise God and be entertained. It is church and community. If there's no church, there's no community and if there's no community, there's no church."
While the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church is located in an urban setting, they operate the Ebenezer Retreat and Camp Institute 20-30 minutes away in Roachdale, Indiana. This campground offers those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS as well as underprivileged children, adults and families, a place to retreat from the everyday hardships in life. Also, it provides an opportunity for campers to learn, heal and grow.
"These kids come from poverty-stricken areas," Dr. Brown said. "Some of the kids who come to the campground have never been out of the city."
To help acquire land and expand this important ministry, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church sought financing from Strongtower Financial.
"The money from Strongtower allowed us to acquire land and lay the foundation to expand our ministry by having space away from the urban setting for young and old alike," Dr. Brown said. "We were able to purchase 64 acres and consolidate our costs for properties."
Strongtower's financing experts work with churches, schools and nonprofit organizations to develop customized financing solutions for their individual needs – even when traditional lenders can't.
Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church's ministry projects are thriving and helping thousands of people in need.
"I believe in addressing education and social needs to move people to be independent and inter-dependent with each other, while serving others," Dr. Brown said. "The focus is on God, but it starts with self to get to God. We show love and manifest what and who God is."
