Biosolids and Odor Control Project, August 2006 Update Metro Water Services (MWS) is pleased to provide this update on the status of the Biosolids and Odor Control Project. There are three
separate project elements included in this effort: upgrade our Central and Dry Creek wastewater treatment facilities, protect the environment
and become a better neighbor to the community.
Central Biosolids Project Update Construction continues for the $117 million biosolids project. Concrete is being placed for the digesters, which will
stabilize sludge and provide methane gas for drying (see photo). Piping and electrical conduit have been placed under the slab that serves as the foundation for the dewatering and
heat drying building (see
photo).
The project is on schedule for start-up activities to begin in
the summer of 2007, and will complete improvements to the Central complex, allowing it to be a better neighbor to the residents of Germantown and
Salemtown. The biosolids facility will require nearly a year for start-up and testing, with final completion of the project in June
2008.
For more details on construction hours and contact
information, visit the biosolids
project page.
Central Odor Control Project Nears Completion The new odor control system at the Central Wastewater
Treatment Plant is beginning start-up activities this month. Most recently, the construction team completed work on the new biofilter
treatment system and is continuing to work to connect ductwork to the new aluminum covers to capture odors (see
photo). While this element of the overall project is critical to
minimizing odor surrounding the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, the most significant improvement will occur once the new biosolids handling
facility is operational beginning in summer 2007. At that time, we will change the way we handle sludge, which is responsible for the remaining odors
emanating from Central. To learn more about the current and future methods of sludge handling at Central, please visit this interactive animation on
our Web site.
Dry Creek Facility Improvement Project Update Just a few weeks behind the Central
odor control project, the Dry Creek odor control project is expected to begin operation in September. The construction team is currently finishing
work on the new biofilter treatment system.
