Democrats Outline 2007 Priorities
(HELENA) – At a joint news conference
today with Democratic legislators at the state Capitol, Senate President Mike Cooney and House Minority Leader John Parker laid out their priorities
for Montana families and communities in 2007.
The priorities emphasize the Democrats
vision of strengthening Montana families by creating good jobs so future generations can stay in Montana, continuing to invest in our education
system, getting needed property tax cuts to Montana homeowners, and providing quality affordable healthcare to Montana families.
“We’re looking forward to
working together to make sure that Montana continues to be the best place to start a business, raise a family and build a community," said Sen.
Cooney.
“Democrats are
committed to making progress for middle-class Montanans during this legislature,” said Rep. Parker. “We will work with Governor
Schweitzer for responsible, common sense solutions to move our state forward, care for our neighbors in need, and boost our economy to create good
jobs.”
Democratic priorities include:
- Historic tax
cuts that go to homeowners and small businesses.
- Health
coverage for more needy children and more access to affordable health care for uninsured
adults.
- Investing in a
competitive, world-class education system, from Kindergarten through college.
- Moving
Montana’s economy forward with renewable energy to create jobs and
lower heating bills.
The legislature is evenly split, with
Democrats controlling the Senate by one vote and Republicans controlling the House. Both Cooney and Parker emphasized the importance of listening to
Montanans and encouraged citizens to contact them with their ideas and concerns. “Working
together, we will move Montana forward,” said Parker. “We need all Montanans to give us their ideas and participate in their
government.”
