Spotlight: Community Education in Mali

Chata Doumbia, a mother of four school-age children in Tiefagala, Mali, had just two years of primary school education when BwB helped her village build a school in 2003. Through BwB's Community Education Program, Mrs. Doumbia learned to read and write and is now teaching others to do the same. By 2007, her village went from 90% illiteracy rate to just 15%. School Kids in Minnesota Join the BwB Movement

The kids in the Discovery Club at Highland Park Elementary School in St. Paul have proven you're never too young to change the world. Even though BwB doesn't run programs in their state, these kids, ranging from kindergarteners to fifth-graders, held fundraisers to help build a school overseas. From a donut sale to a book swap, the club's dedication paid off as they raised $800. Read more...

CT Students Launch a Reading Revolution

BwB students in Connecticut held a Reading Revolution for their annual spring service project. Nearly 190 students from seventeen BwB programs ran the event for the 300 adults and children who attended from the community. The students helped children make bilingual books and bookmarks to be sent to BwB schools in Nicaragua. They also read stories, played literacy games and held a massive book distribution so that everyone who attended took home books for their families. Click here to read more.
