Five Good Books
Song Yet Sung
Winter in Madrid
Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism
Mozart's Ghost
The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw: One Woman's Fight to Save the World's Most Beautiful Bird

Song Yet Sung

James McBride

The slave-owning culture of Maryland's eastern shore in the 1850s is the setting for McBride's second novel (following Miracle at St. Anna, 2002, and the bestselling memoir The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother, 1996). In this explosively dramatic novel, McBride has fashioned a myth of retribution and sacrifice that recalls both William Faulkner's sagas of blighted generations and Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon.

Hardcover, $25.95
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA), ISBN-13: 9781594489723

Winter in Madrid

C.J. Sansom

Fans of Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind and Faulks's Birdsong will love this compelling historical thriller and love story set in post-Civil War Spain. When Harry Brett, a reluctant spy for the British Secret Service, is sent to Madrid to spy on an old school friend, he finds himself involved in a dangerous game. This is an intimate and riveting tale that depicts a sense of history unfolding and the profound impact of impossible choices.

Hardcover, $25.95
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA), ISBN-13: 9780670018482

Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism

Muhammad Yunus

If you've seen Yunus interviewed, you already know that he is a brilliant, articulate man with a compelling vision. Here, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize outlines his new business model that combines the power of free markets with the quest for a more humane world. Creating a World Without Poverty tells the stories of some of the earliest examples of social businesses, including Yunus's own Grameen Bank.

Hardcover, $26.00
Publisher: Perseus Publishing; ISBN-13: 9781586484934

Mozart's Ghost

Julia Cameron

Cameron is the author of 26 books and is best-known for The Artist's Way. In this novel, she tells the story of Anna Chester, who supports herself by substitute teaching while pursuing a sideline career as a medium. When a talented pianist becomes a neighbor, Anna starts receiving frequent visits from the ghost of Mozart, who encourages Anna to pursue a romantic relationship with the musician.

Hardcover, $24.95
Publisher: St. Martin's Press; ISBN-13: 9780312369118

The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw: One Woman's Fight to Save the World's Most Beautiful Bird

Bruce Barcott

As a young woman, Sharon Matola found her true calling: caring for orphaned animals at her own zoo in Belize. When powerful outside forces conspired with the local government to build a dam that would flood the nesting ground of the last scarlet macaws in Belize, Matola was drawn into a crusade to stop a multinational corporation. As he tells this dramatic story, Barcott addresses the realities of economic survival in Third World countries, explores the tension between environmental conservation and human development, and puts a human face on the battle over globalization.

For Readers of All Ages
Un Lun Dun
China Mieville

Un Lun Dun is a place where words are alive, a jungle lurks behind the door of an ordinary house, carnivorous giraffes stalk the streets, and a dark cloud dreams of burning the world. It is a city awaiting its hero, whose coming was prophesied long ago. When twelve-year-old Zanna finds a secret entrance into this strange city, it seems that the ancient prophecy is coming true — until things begin to go shockingly wrong. Mieville is acclaimed for adult novels such as King Rat. This first book for a younger audience provides "more imaginative sparks per chapter than most authors can manufacture in a whole book" (Washington Post).

Sacred Games
The Witch of Portobello
Nineteen Minutes
The Kitchen Readings: Untold Stories of Hunter S. Thompson
Chocolate Cake Sutra: Ingredients for a Sweet Life

Sacred Games

Vikram Chandra

Seven years in the making, Sacred Games is a magnificent story of friendship and betrayal, of terrible violence, and of an astonishing modern city and its dark side. The novel draws the reader into the life of Inspector Sartaj Singh and into the criminal underworld of Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India. Drawing inspiration from the classics of nineteenth-century fiction, mystery novels, Bollywood movies and Chandra's own life and research on the streets of Mumbai, the story resonates with intelligence and emotional depth.

Paperback, $16.95
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers; ISBN-13: 9780061130366

The Witch of Portobello

Paulo Coelho

How do we find the courage to always be true to ourselves, even if we are unsure of whom we are? Coelho (The Alchemist) explores this theme with a fusion of philosophy, religious miracle and moral parable. It is the story of a mysterious woman named Athena (Sherine Khalil), told by the many who knew her. Framed as a set of interviews, it is an account of a young woman's ascendancy as a guru. (In case you're wondering, "Portobello" refers to London's Portobello Road.)

Paperback, 13.95
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers; ISBN-13: 9780061338816

Nineteen Minutes

Jodi Piccoult

Nineteen Minutes is bestselling author Jodi Picoult's most raw, honest, and important novel yet. When a small town's complacency is shattered by a shocking act of violence, the residents must not only seek justice but also come to terms with the role they played in the tragedy. Told in a straightforward style, the story raises questions that have no easy answers: Can your own child become a mystery to you? What does it mean to be different in our society? Is it ever okay for a victim to strike back? And who — if anyone — has the right to judge someone else?

Paperback, $15.00
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group; ISBN-13: 9780743496735

The Kitchen Readings: Untold Stories of Hunter S. Thompson

Michael Cleverly and Bob Braudis

As Thompson's reputation as a hellion spread, many old-time residents of the Colorado mountain town where he lived were fiercely protective. That attitude is clearly represented by this book's pair of authors, an artist and a sheriff, who relate numerous tales of paranoid and wanton destruction with the same indulgence one reserves for a dangerously eccentric relative. The book keeps the stargazing to a minimum and presents Thompson as a man who was fortunate he could write because he was inept at day-to-day life.

Paperback, $13.95
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers; ISBN-13: 9780061159282

Chocolate Cake Sutra: Ingredients for a Sweet Life

Geri Larkin

Geri Larkin gave up a successful career as a management consultant to become an ordained Dharma teacher. Here, she explains that her recipe for a fruitful life includes an assortment of ingredients that help us endure the slings and arrows of life: joy, tolerance, clear-headedness, adventure, and wisdom. In the best Zen tradition, she recounts personal anecdotes that will help you let go of perfectionism and celebrate the sacred nature of the life you already have.

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers; ISBN-13: 9780060859589

Music

Sleep Through the Static

Jack Johnson $13.95
Genre: Pop/Folk

Johnson says that personal losses led him into darker territory for his fifth album. He may use more electric guitars than acoustics on Sleep Through the Static, but he's strumming them like acoustics and his overall aesthetic has not changed at all; he's still a laid-back guy singing songs.

Prism: The Human Family Songbook

Beth Nielsen Chapman $16.95
Genre: Pop/Folk

Chapman's newest project is an ambitious double CD celebrating the diversity of human religious expression. Prism blends Chapman's own contemporary folk with traditional songs of devotion from Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other faiths. Going global, she sings in nine different languages.

Bucket

Mando Saenz $12.95
Genre: Pop/Folk

This will probably be Americana artist Saenz's breakthrough album. Whereas his previous releases established Saenz as an acoustic country artist, Bucket comes across as confident country rock with songs self-penned or written collaboratively.

Book of Sparrows

Tracy Grammer $11.95
Genre: Pop/Folk

This album features seven songs by a range of songwriters, including Tom Russell, Kate Power, Paul Simon, and of course, Dave Carter. Released in December, it was the #3 most-played album on folk radio in December 2007. (It quickly sold out and has only just come back into stock.)

Symphony

Sarah Brightman $18.95
Genre: Classical

Brightman's music runs the gamut from pure classical to near-campy orchestral pop. After a five year absence from recording, she returns with another broad assortment. She's joined by Andrea Bocelli on the stirring operatic "Canto Della Terra," and by KISS member Paul Stanley on the soft pop "I Will Be With You."

Introducing Reviews@Roots
Have you recently read a book you enjoyed so much you could hardly wait to tell friends about it?

We've set up a new feature on our website called Reviews@Roots. It's a place where you can share your own short, informal book review.

Here's how it works:

  • Go to www.grassrootsbookstore.com and click Reviews@Roots in the navigation bar.

  • We ask for contact information if we need to reach you. But, you can choose whether or not you want us to use your name when we publish your review.

  • You can write two kinds of reviews: a paragraph (suitable for the newsletter) and a sentence or phrase (appropriate for an in-store poster).

  • All the reviews will go into a binder that we'll place in the store for customers to browse. Some reviews will also appear in the newsletter or a poster.

We're looking forward to hearing from you and setting up this exchange of thoughts and impressions.

For those of you who are a bit shy about writing: GR has several good editors on its staff. We'll work with you, if you'd like, to polish your prose.
