Hi ,

Getting in front of your target audience at the right time and the right message is becoming more and more important. Why? Because it is becoming more and more possible. Search engine marketing (SEM) has enabled businesses to be able to get their offerings noticed by prospects who are actively searching for them, even when the prospects doesn't know what they are searching for!

The basis for all of this is organizing your SEM around the proper keywords. To give you a running start, we've compiled a list of the ten top keyword research tools (see chart below), and put together several articles to help you better understand the role of keywords and how finding the right ones can put your business on the road to success.

Alphabetical Order is Obsolete
The best way to organize information is to organize it based on what makes most sense to you. Traditional systems, like the Dewy Decimal system, alphabetized lists, etc., were created to help information quickly, but you need to learn the system first. However, the biggest flaw in these systems is they aren't necessarily what's best for any particular situation; they don't work in certain contexts.

To better explain this concept, you'll be better off reading this post, written by Seth Godin on his blog, as well as the book recommendation he makes further on in the article:

I love the alphabet and the fact that it has an order. There's no reason for the order of the letters, but there you go.

With computers, though, alphabetical order is almost always a bad idea, even chronological order doesn't work perfectly.

Example: When I look through my spam folder, I shouldn't see the notes in chrono order or alphabetical by sender (with AAAA' going first...). No, I should see the notes in order of least likely to be spam to most likely. Right?

Keywords: The Roots of Organization

There are many people I know who think of keyword research as a tedious, mundane, it's-not-worth-my-time, boring task that's ultimately an ignored perennial on the to-do list.

Well, I have a confession to make. I used to be one of those people, sort of. I actually came from the other side of the same coin; I'm a bit of an organizational freak of nature. I like to keep things organized. I recently coached my son's t-ball team, and while I wasn't necessarily the best coach in the world, I did get a lot of "compliments" from my players' parents on how organized things were. So, where I saw the list of potential keywords for a web site, I'd be overwhelmed and full of dread; there's no way I could ever really tackle this problem and actually accomplish something at the same time. It was better to leave this on the "to-do" list than to take it off.

Keyword Research Tool Guide

About a year ago, Lee Odden of Online Marketing Blog conducted a survey and found the most popular keyword research tools in the industry. I decided to take that list and combine it with a MarketingSherpa keyword list recommendation and a little more detail on the why and how these tools are useful.

Major Caveat: Keyword research tools are incredibly helpful, but you would be misguided to think that using only keyword tools such as those listed below will provide the final solution to your keyword puzzle. In addition to tools, you must use your own logic, thinking, insight, and understanding of your goals and audience.
