Take me to your Liter.

A green army of unusual size and bizarre names has taken over our little table in the white section. We've actually been expecting them since before we opened, and they are finally here!! We couldn't be more excited about them.

But who are "they?" They hail from Germany, and they are Silvaner and Sheurebe (a cross of Riesling and Silvaner), and they come in a rarely seen 1 Liter size!!

Pros of the Liter? Sometimes, even with good company, cracking a 1.5L (twice the size of a "normal" 750mL bottle) can result in wine going to waste. This is something we are vehemently against. The Liter provides enough for 8 glasses (depending on the pour), or enough to use one cup in cooking and then still have a whole bottle's worth left over.

And let's be honest - it's just cool. It's kind of like a normal bottle + 25% free!

Not only are these wines in a different size bottle than most, but contain two unique varietals we do not see enough of stateside. These wines are very low production and we are very lucky to have them. And the price is great: only $15 each!

2006 Gysler Silvaner - "The best of these since the wonderful 2002; amazingly sleek and clear- has silvaner ever had this much definition? Almost hyacinth in its pungent floweriness; seemlessly balanced and charming; a pleasure- giving wine with limpid spring water purity and freshness. A better value than this can not be imagined!"

2006 Gysler Sheurebe - "Oh man, this curls the toes. A perfect light bodied Scheu; clear and long and spicy and irresistibly magnetic and vital; it's liquid static electricity, and this one is jammed with catty cassis and wild lavender. There's only 80 cases (worldwide), so do not tarry. The wine is gee-or-jess!"

Quotes from Terry Theise

Turkey Time is Riesling Time

You're probably still thinking, "What do I do with all these 'fun size' butterfingers??!!" But we're already thinking about turkey. It's largely because we just got in some amazing new Rieslings from Germany. They are the perfect accompaniment to turkey as well as many other foods. In fact, we decided to have a little Thai dinner and taste a few of them - it was like magic. No other wine could have paired so well, balanced the spices, enhanced the exotic yet savory flavors so effortlessly . . .

The three Rieslings we tried are all quite unique:  one is rich, one is more tart, and one is somewhere in the middle. To encourage you to hold your own "Thai + Riesling" extravaganza, we are offering a deal: Try all 3 for $10 off the combined price ($63). Totally worth it - world class wines from small producers on single vineyard sites. We can't stress it enough: the wine experts of the world pretty much unanimously declare Riesling as one of, if not THE, world's greatest grapes.

2006 Karlsmuhle Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett - $25

Pink lemonade with a generous body and softly encroaching layers awash with slatey minerality, baked pear and a touch of cassis and cinnamon.

2006 Kruger-Rumpf Munsterer Rheinberg Riesling Kabinett - $23

Golden Delicious & Fuji apples in spades, with touches of lime; the lightest and sprightliest of the three. Hints at the richer on the finish: yellow roses and vanilla.

2005 J & H.A. Strub Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling Spatlese - $25

The richest of the three: but a richness that you never feel gluttenous about. Golden, with the signature mineral smell you get from the best Rieslings. Rich baked apples, balanced with glistening acidity and a touch of lemon/lime accent, with a reverberating finsh.

Exotic & Autumnal: 2 Great Reds, $12 Each

2006 Panarroz - Jumilla, Spain - $12

New to the store! We love the Jumilla region of Spain: consistently high quality, interesting wines at great prices. This one is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre (aka Monastrell, the region's most widely-planted grape). It's medium-bodied, and at first there's a lot of stewey earthiness on the nose, which quickly gives way to a palate-full of dried strawberries, plums, licorice and cherries. Minerality lines the finish, and it's a long one: we still had a nice taste of ice tea and dry fruit a few minutes later. Great value! It got 90 points from Robert Parker.

2004 Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva - Sardegna, Italy - was $14; SALE $12

We've had this wine in the store for a month, and are excited to offer it now for a reduced price! Cannonau is the local term for Grenache, and the winery only offers the Riserva version in especially good vintages. It's a fantastic alternative for Pinot Noir drinkers, as it's light with a touch of spice and nice earthiness. A great seafood red from a region we see very little of in the US.
