DOD Breast Cancer Research Program Again Needs Your Support!

The time has come again for U.S. Representatives to sign a Dear Colleague letter in support of full funding of the DOD BCRP.  The deadline for representatives to sign this letter is Monday, March 13th so watch for an alert this week asking you to call your U.S. Representative!

To date the following U.S. Representatives from Illinois have agreed to sign the letter for FY 2007:

  • Rep. Bean
  • Rep. Schakowsky
  • Rep. Biggert (sponsor of the letter)

Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act Work Continues

This much needed research will authorize $30 million for five years to NIEHS to study the potential links between the environment and breast cancer. Work to increase co-sponsors and bring this bill to the floor for a vote continues.

Senator Obama Proposes Health Care Assistance for U.S. Automakers
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) proposed at a speech last week to a panel at the National Governors Association conference that the federal government pay some of the Big Three U.S. automakers' health care costs in exchange for their agreeing to manufacture cars that get higher gasoline mileage. HHS officials on Monday said they likely will approve a waiver to allow Arkansas to receive federal Medicaid funds for an "innovative" employer-based health insurance program that "does not meet the usual Medicaid standards for eligibility and benefits."  Read more .


Massachusetts Leaders Agree to Health Care Reform

Massachusetts House and Senate leaders on Friday decided to charge assessments on businesses that do not provide health insurance to their employees, leading the way for the state Legislature to pass a "sweeping" health care bill.  Read more .

~ An ambulance in the U.S. is diverted to a different hospital every minute, on average, because of emergency department overcrowding or bed shortages, according to a study released on Monday by the National Center for Health Statistics.


~ Forty-five percent of seniors have enrolled in the Medicare prescription drug benefit or plan to enroll before the May 15 deadline, while 29% do not plan to enroll and 23% are unsure, according to a tracking poll released by the Kaiser Family Foundation.


~ By 2015, one of every five dollars spent in the U.S. economy will pay for health care, and almost half of that money will be spent by state and federal governments, according to a report released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.


~ A couple without employer-sponsored retiree health coverage retiring at age 65 will need $200,000 on average to pay for out-of-pocket basic health care costs during retirement, according to Fidelity Investments'  the Wall Street Journal reports.
