GREETINGS
Bounce, bounce...Gobble, gobble...Bounce, bounce...Gobble, gobble. Basketball season has started; Thanksgiving is here. The link between the two: legendary basketball coach John Wooden. He promotes 9 Promises based on the Creed of Optimist International. These positive affirmations can help us be thankful and look for the positives in our daily lives.

ACTIVITIES AND TIMELY TIPS

Promoting Academic Success for All

In addition to encouraging the social success for all students, student leadership teams are becoming stakeholders in promoting the academic success for all students as well. One way to promote academic success is to become familiar with the issues that are holding some students back in classes. Two recent reports shed light on some of these obstacles.

The Silent Epidemic: Perspectives of High School Dropouts
A research project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that identifies the reasons why students decide to quit school.

Study Finds School and Family Ties Protect Teens from Risky Behavior
The largest research study ever undertaken on adolescents in the United States was conducted by the University of Minnesota and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The study found that feeling connected to school protects teens from a variety of health risks.

December

December Bingo's Birthday Month: Have a Bingo Fundraiser for a school project or organize a bingo party for a local nursing home.

Dec. 2-8 National Handwashing Awareness Week: Promote and encourage handwashing through a clever marketing campaign.

Dec. 10 Nobel Prize Day: Have students create bulletin boards highlighting who the 2007 winners are and what they achieved. Create your own "Local Nobel Prize" awards to recognize students and staff contributing positively to the school and community.

Dec. 10-16 Human Rights Week: Have students research prisoners of conscience and encourage them to write letters to the appropriate governments or international organizations on behalf of the prisoners. Create bulletin boards illustrating the Geneva Convention.

Dec. 17 Wright Brothers Day: Organize a paper airplane contest.
Dec. 22 National Haiku Poetry Day: Have a haiku reading.
