season has started; Thanksgiving is here. The link between
the two: legendary basketball coach John Wooden.

ACTIVITIES AND TIMELY
TIPS
Promoting Academic Success
for All
In addition to encouraging the social success for
all students,
student leadership teams are becoming stakeholders in promoting the academic
success for all students as well. One way to promote academic success is to
become familiar with the issues that are holding some students back in classes.
Two recent reports shed light on some of these obstacles.
The Silent Epidemic: Perspectives of
High School Dropouts
A research project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that
identifies the reasons why students decide to quit school.
Study Finds School and Family
Ties Protect Teens from Risky Behavior

was conducted by the University of Minnesota and funded by the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation. The study found that feeling connected to school protects
teens from a variety of health risks.
