Join GENny and Friends for Happy Hour

This Valentine's Day, be sure to save a place in your heart for GENny. GENaustin, the Girls Empowerment Network of Austin, invites adults ages 21 and up to attend the "I Dream of GENny" happy hour.  The event will take place at McCormick & Schmicks on February 15th from 5:30-7:30.  Our staff, volunteers, supporters and community members will get a chance to mingle and enjoy live music by Kathleen O'Keefe. Your $10 ($5 volunteers) cover charge, which includes two Tito's Vodka martinis and appetizers helps teen girls define their personal values and build critical thinking skills to make wise choices.

Calling All Future Female Leaders of the Free World

Could a girl or woman you know someday be President of the United States? GENaustin encourages all girls to become leaders. Fresh Perspectives asks girls and women ages 8 to 35 whose professional goal is to run for President to enter a national essay contest. The winning essays will be published in a book created by writer Amy Sewell to empower young girls. To enter, provide an essay of any length about who you are and why you aspire to run for president with a recent photo.

Timely Girl Talk Topic Encourages Healthy Relationships

In response to Dating Violence Awareness Week, Feb. 5-9, the GENaustin Girl Talk series promotes safe and healthy relationships for all girls. "Communicate and Earn Respect" will help girls communicate their feelings, increase their sense of personal safety and develop coping skills. Randy Randolph of SafePlace will deliver the presentation, which is based on the organization's "Expect Respect" school program. Ms. Randolph has worked with SafePlace for over five years creating and providing educational programs on dating and sexual violence prevention and youth leadership.

The discussion begins at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Dobie Middle School. Click here for more information and the complete Girl Talk schedule.

Body Image Workshop Educates Adults on Major Issue Facing Girls

GENaustin invites parents and others who work with teen girls to attend a workshop on body image. Participants will explore some causes and effects of poor body image, and they will gain tools to help girls grades 4-12 establish a positive self-image and love for their bodies.

Statistics indicate many adolescent girls struggle with body image issues:

  • By age 13, 53% of girls are unhappy with their bodies
  • By age 18, 78% of girls are dissatisfied with their bodies
  • One in five girls will have a serious eating disorder by their early 20s (Deak, 2002)

The workshop will take place Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 6:30-8 p.m. in Conference Room B of Dougherty Arts Center.  The cost is $35, and participation will be capped at 20 people. Click here for registration and more information. Registration deadline is February 23rd.

Two Austin Women's Conferences Support GENaustin

The Association of Women in Technology in Austin and the Remarkable Women's Conference both chose to support GENaustin through their upcoming conferences.

At the 2007 AWTA Women's Business Conference, GENaustin will be given a platform to promote clubGEN and our other initiatives. The Feb. 7 conference features presentations by Gay Gaddis, CEO of T3 (The Think Tank); and futurist, poet and author, Dr. Betty Sue Flowers. To register, visit the AWTA website.

The Remarkable Women's Conference features speakers from the categories of Corporate Success, Entrepreneurial Success, Personal Development and Health and Wellness. This year, 10% of the proceeds from the conference will be donated to GENaustin. The conference will be held May 11-12, and a "Cooking Healthy for Your Sweetheart" workshop Feb. 7 will build anticipation for the event. Visit the Remarkable Women's Conference website for more details.

GENaustin thanks ATWA and the Remarkable Women's Conference for their generous support.
