Greek of the Week

Whitney Carr

As we near the end of the semester and Panhellenic officers must step down, it’s only necessary to highlight one of the key women on board. Following a very successful first-ever Panhellenic Halloween Carnival, it seems obvious that Sunny Schartau should be recognized.

She and Junior Panhellenic made this carnival what it was. Sunny, who is a senior PR major from Franklin, serves currently as the Vice President of Internal Affairs for NPC. Aside from being the right-hand man to the president, it is Sunny’s job to oversee other offices. But what is her favorite part about being the NPC Vice President?

“Becoming so close with women in other organizations. And I’ve really loved working with Junior Pan” Schartau says.

Junior Panhellenic is comprised of two new members from each sorority that serve their own purpose like planning Progressive Dinner and this year’s Halloween Carnival.

“Being in Junior Pan lays groundwork for girls becoming Panhellenic. It teaches the girls about how the system works and hopefully encourages them to run for future offices whether it be in their organization or on Panhellenic,” Schartau explains.

And the Junior Panhellenic delegates have been doing a great job! When she’s not being the commander in chief for Junior Pan or assisting our president with matters, Sunny is an up-and-coming performer. She is a songwriter and has the pipes to go along with her acoustic beats. Who knows what the future holds for her! Whatever it is, being VP will not be part of it since new officers with be inducted before the end of the semester. And it’s been a great ride. “The friendships and the experience,” are what matter’s most to her. Best wishes Sunny and thanks for a year of service on the Panhellenic Council!

First Blitz Build Home is Completed

Sarah Russell

After almost two years of fundraising and three weeks of building, the largest philanthropy project ever attempted by the MTSU Student Government Association came to an end.  On November 8, members of SGA, student organizations, and other participants in the Blitz Build gathered for the dedication of the first MTSU sponsored Habitat for Humanity home.

Although the actual construction of the home began on October 17, raising enough money to make the Blitz Build possible has been a much longer process.

“I can still remember volunteering at the first major Blitz Build fundraising event, which was Cheer for Humanity in January 2006,” said Crystal Griffey, the SGA Philanthropic Coordinator.  “Seeing the fruits of our labor over the past 2 years is the best part for me.”

At the dedication ceremony, representatives from the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity joined MTSU students and staff to present the Bautista family with their brand new home.  The family of five have been living in public housing and showed extreme gratitude for the first home they have ever called their own.

“I hope that finally seeing the completion of the first MTSU sponsored Habitat home will encourage more students and members of the MTSU community to get involved next year,” said Griffey.

The next Blitz Build is already in the planning stages.  It takes $60,000 to sponsor a Habitat home, so fundraising is the first priority.  The next fundraising event to begin work on the next home will be the 3rd Annual Cheer for Humanity Cheer & Dance Competition to be held January 12 in the Murphy Center.

New Member Speakout

Jonathan Joy

The All Greek Council is hosting a new member speakout on Thursday at 7 in the BAS State Farm Room.  The speakout will inform our new Greeks about the problems of hazing and poor time management.

The speakout will begin with three skits.  The first of these skits will teach about the affects of mental hazing.  The second will discuss the affects of physical hazing, and the third will demonstrate a combination of the two.  After the skits, the speak out will teach the importance of time management.

“After initiation, many new members feel they are ready to take on many tasks Greek Life has to offer,” said Christopher Williams, new member coordinator of the All Greek Council and president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “Unfortunately, many new members forget what is important—school.”

Meagan Flippin was chosen to speak on the subject.

“I could not have thought of a better person myself,” said Josh McKenzie, president of the All Greek Council.  “She has given so much to the university.”

Chapter of the Month

Jonathan Joy

The All Greek Council has chosen to recognize an outstanding Greek organization each month.  Chapters are evaluated based on their ability to uphold the four pillars of Greek Life:  Service, Scholarship, Loyalty, and Friendship.  It was a long debate, but the first recipient of the AGC Chapter of the Month award goes to Alpha Omicron Pi.

“The women of AOΠ strive to live selflessly and help others,” said Emily Porter, president of AOΠ.  Porter was also recently crowned Homecoming Queen 2007.

AOΠ raised over $22,000 with the chapter’s 10th annual Smoke Out Arthritis BBQ and the Heart Walk during summer and fall 2007 semester.  But the organization is still not finished with their efforts to help the community.

“Our next philanthropic projects include a fall festival put on with the men of Pi Kappa Alpha for the Boys and Girls Club, and a Red Cross Blood Drive put on in collaboration with the men from Alpha Gamma Rho,” said Porter.

Alpha Omicron Pi strove to soar academically as well with an overall grade point average of 3.242.

AOΠ was founded nationally in 1897 at Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City, NY and locally at MTSU in 1985.  Their color is cardinal red, and the unofficial mascot is the panda bear.  After initiating their new member class, their active roster will include over 120 women.
