The new 35 Pearl Street location in DUMBO

Dear Friends,

It's hard to believe that 2007 is about to come to a close.  It has been a terrific year- one full of changes and accomplishments at Recycle-A-Bicycle.   Here are a few of the highlights:

  • We took in approximately 1000 bicycles that would otherwise have entered the waste stream.
  • We nearly doubled the number of rides we did this year with our ride club for a total of 16 rides and 500 miles covered over the spring, summer and fall.
  • We began two new school partnerships this year.  First, with the Eugene Lang College of the New School, we began teaching a cycling and bicycle building/repair course for college students.  This winter, the Manhattan High School (P35M) began a Recycle-A-Bicycle repair shop.
  • We held our first street bike sale in LIC organized by our Summer Youth Employment Interns as their final project.
  • We held recycled bicycle art workshops with youth at the Grand Central Station street fair and the Brooklyn Children's Museum in honor of Earth Day.  Our students had their art work on display during the "Why I Ride" exhibit and the Recycle A-Bicycle Youth Art show in DUMBO as part of NYC Bike Month.
  • We co-sponsored the inaugural Youth Art Bike ride for the Lower East Side with the EVCC and other local community groups.  We had about 200 youth participants and some terrific looking bikes.
  • Most recently, we have just opened our new DUMBO location at 35 Pearl Street, pictured above.  Here we will have a dedicated year round student repair/classroom space.  We are so excited for the opportunities this will bring to give more youth the chance to learn about bicycle repair and learn a marketable skill.  Furthermore, everyone will have the opportunity to recycle and make something new.

As you are deciding your end of the year tax deductible giving, please consider a donation to Recycle-A-Bicycle.  You may donate safely on-line by linking to our website and clicking on the "Donate Now" icon or you may send a check in the mail to Recycle-A-Bicycle at 35 Pearl Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

None of this important work could happen without the support we receive from you.   Thank you for helping us to make 2007 a terrific year!

Sincerely,

Lisa Stein
