davis downtown Retail Crime Alert - Counterfeit travelers' checks have been circulating in the I-80 corridor area.  The checks are from AAA (American Automobile Association) and look authentic.   If you have the slightest doubt of its authenticity, call the "issuing" company to verify.  

Severe Cold Weather Alert - Warming Center and Shelters in Davis - The City of Davis Parks & Community Services Department has opened a Day Warming Center at the Veterans Memorial Center, 203 East 14th Street.  This drop-in warming center will provide a safe haven from the near record low temperatures expected over the next several days. The center will primarily serve those at most at risk - elderly, disabled and homeless.

The Warming Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 11 (Thursday), January 12 (Friday), January 13 (Saturday) and January 14 (Sunday).

The Warming Center is complementary to the Davis Community Meals overnight shelters in operation Thursday through Sunday nights from 6 p.m. through 8 a.m. The shelter locations at 512 5th Street (12 beds) and at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, 640 Hawthorne Lane (carpeted floor space for sleeping; some sleeping bags /blankets available.)

Davis residents are encouraged to be aware of frail elderly, disabled, and shut-in neighbors, as well as local homeless individuals and families, and to encourage people to take refuge in heated, indoor spaces. Individuals without heat should be referred to the warming center and to the overnight shelters. The non-emergency line of the Davis Police Department at (530) 747-5400 is available to report significant cases at risk because of the cold weather. These calls will be referred to local social services agencies for resolution, as possible.


MLK

The 13th Annual City of Davis Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will take place on Monday, January 15, beginning at noon at the Varsity Theater, 616 Second Street. For more information on the program, go to http://www.ci.davis.ca.us/story/?story=MLK.  Immediately following the program (at approximately 1:15 p.m.), there will be a Freedom March downtown beginning at the Varsity, going west on Second, north on E Street, east on Third, South on F Street and west on Second, concluding back at the Varsity.
