| Introducing This Week's Books
| | | | |
"Where there is love there is life." — Mahatma Gandhi "We are shaped and fashioned by what we love." — Johann von Goethe "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength; loving someone deeply gives you courage." — Lao-Tzu "At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet." — Plato "Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get — only with what you are expecting to give — which is everything." — Katharine Hepburn Here's an interesting statistic: The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making February 14 the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. (Another interesting tidbit: the association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentine cards.) We couldn't find any statistics on the number of books exchanged on Valentine's Day. But, given the amount of incredible literature that's been written about love, we think it's a terrific idea! So, this week we're featuring some store favorites.

Christopher Phillips goes to the heart of philosophy and Socratic discourse to discover what we're all looking for: the kind of love that makes life worthwhile. Pablo Neruda's love poems caused a scandal when they were published anonymously in 1952. In later editions, these verses became the most celebrated of the Noble Prize winner's work. | | Music
| | | | | | | Ilembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu
Ladysmith Black Mambazo — $18.95 Genre: Ethnic/World
Ilembe pays tribute to the leader who built the Zulu nation. Whereas many of LBM's recent albums paired the vocal group with popular western artists, this album returns them to a more traditional sound.
| |
North Mississippi Allstars — $15.95 Genre: Folk/Pop
NMA began as an extension of the dirty southern blues of RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, but gradually incorporated elements of funk and rock into the mix. Hernando brings them closer to their roots. The sound is crisp and thundering, but still retains the ragged looseness that is their trademark and one of their biggest strengths. This is blues-rock done Mississippi style.
| |
Patty Larkin — $16.95 Genre: Folk/Pop
Larkin is a clever, literate singer/songwriter and superb guitarist. This album, her first in five years, shows that she continues to grow as an artist. In addition to the song writing, singing and intricate guitar work, Larkin also produced, engineered and played all the instruments.
| Brighter Than Creation's Dark
Drive By Truckers — $18.95 Genre: Folk/Pop
The band's first album since the departure of Jason Isbell is a dazzling return to form, delivering some of their finest, most eclectic, and most mature gothic roots rock to date. Founding members Hood and Mike Cooley have written some excellent new songs, and bassist Shonna Tucker steps forward as a composer and lead vocalist.
| |
Matt Costa — $13.95 Genre: Folk/Pop
This is Costa's second release on Brushfire Records, the label co-founded by Jack Johnson. His gentle artistry, skillful guitar playing, and great arrangement contribute to the laid back, upbeat atmosphere.
