Introducing This Week's Books

"Where there is love there is life."
— Mahatma Gandhi

"We are shaped and fashioned by what we love."
— Johann von Goethe

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength; loving someone deeply gives you courage."
— Lao-Tzu

"At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet."
— Plato

"Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get — only with what you are expecting to give — which is everything."
— Katharine Hepburn

Here's an interesting statistic: The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making February 14 the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. (Another interesting tidbit: the association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentine cards.)

We couldn't find any statistics on the number of books exchanged on Valentine's Day. But, given the amount of incredible literature that's been written about love, we think it's a terrific idea! So, this week we're featuring some store favorites.

My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead: Great Love Stories from Chekhov to Munro

edited by Jeffrey Eugenides

This anthology of 26 stores is well packed with classics — stories from Faulkner, Chekhov, Joyce, Nabokov, and Carver among them. Contemporary tales by Deborah Eisenberg, Denis Johnson, Miranda July, and others round out the assortment. (The sparrow in the title was one character of an inconvenient love triangle described by the Latin poet Gaius Catullus in 84 B.C.)

Hardcover, $24.95
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers, ISBN-13: 9780061240379

Valentines

Ted Kooser, illustrated by Robert Hanna

In 1986, Kooser (U.S. poet laureate 2004-2006) started a tradition. He sent a Valentine's Day poem on a postcard to 50 women. Over the past 30 years, he's sent his annual poem to an increasing number of women (in 2007 there were 2,600 recipients). This collection presents all the postcard poems plus one more dedicated to his wife.

Hardcover, $14.95
Publisher: University of Nebraska Press, ISBN-13: 9780803217706

Will You Marry Me? Seven Centuries of Love

edited by Helene Scheu-Riesz

This lavishly illustrated book compiles letters containing marriage proposals written by historical figures. Each of these enchanting missives illustrates the unique sensibilities of the time period in which it was written. Grouped by era (Renaissance, Baroque, Victorian, etc.) the collection includes declarations of love by Henry VIII (to Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour), Abraham Lincoln, Victor Hugo, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jonathan Swift, and Sir Walter Scott.

Socrates in Love: Philosophy for a Die-Hard Romantic

Christopher Phillips

Christopher Phillips goes to the heart of philosophy and Socratic discourse to discover what we're all looking for: the kind of love that makes life worthwhile. Along the way, he talks with moms and dads about parent love, with inmates of a maximum-security prison about unconditional love, and with Japanese seniors and schoolchildren in Hiroshima Peace Park. Throughout, he enriches his dialogues with commentary by great philosophers.

Paperback, $14.95
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc.; ISBN-13: 9780393330670

Love Poems

Pablo Neruda, Donald D. Walsh (Translator), Donald Walsh (Translator)

Pablo Neruda's love poems caused a scandal when they were published anonymously in 1952. In later editions, these verses became the most celebrated of the Noble Prize winner's work. Written on the island of Capri, Love Poems embraces the surrounding seascapes, saturating the images of shores and waves with a yearning eroticism.

Paperback, $11.95
Publisher: New Directions Publishing Corporation; ISBN-13: 9780811217293

Bloom: A Little Book about Finding Love
Maria Van Lieshout, Molly Leach (Illustrator)

Music

Ilembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu

Ladysmith Black Mambazo — $18.95
Genre: Ethnic/World

Ilembe pays tribute to the leader who built the Zulu nation. Whereas many of LBM's recent albums paired the vocal group with popular western artists, this album returns them to a more traditional sound.

Hernando

North Mississippi Allstars — $15.95
Genre: Folk/Pop

NMA began as an extension of the dirty southern blues of RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, but gradually incorporated elements of funk and rock into the mix. Hernando brings them closer to their roots. The sound is crisp and thundering, but still retains the ragged looseness that is their trademark and one of their biggest strengths. This is blues-rock done Mississippi style.

Watch the Sky

Patty Larkin — $16.95
Genre: Folk/Pop

Larkin is a clever, literate singer/songwriter and superb guitarist. This album, her first in five years, shows that she continues to grow as an artist. In addition to the song writing, singing and intricate guitar work, Larkin also produced, engineered and played all the instruments.

Brighter Than Creation's Dark

Drive By Truckers — $18.95
Genre: Folk/Pop

The band's first album since the departure of Jason Isbell is a dazzling return to form, delivering some of their finest, most eclectic, and most mature gothic roots rock to date. Founding members Hood and Mike Cooley have written some excellent new songs, and bassist Shonna Tucker steps forward as a composer and lead vocalist.

Unfamiliar Faces

Matt Costa — $13.95
Genre: Folk/Pop

This is Costa's second release on Brushfire Records, the label co-founded by Jack Johnson. His gentle artistry, skillful guitar playing, and great arrangement contribute to the laid back, upbeat atmosphere.

Survey Results
We had a great response to last week's survey on mystery novels. Here's a summary of what we learned:
  • Although most respondents have a interest in mysteries (43% are very interested), most people said they infrequently purchased mysteries.

  • A majority said that, when they did purchase a mystery, they usually bought the paperback edition. They occasionally buy the hardcover edition based on recommendations by friends, reviews, and author interviews.

  • The most popular sub-genres are: series, woman sleuths, and historical. However, almost all the categories had "very interested" fans. The lowest interest seems to be in anthologies and short stories.

Thank you for your feedback. It will help us refine our selection to match your interests.
