August 2008 Newsletter

President's Message

by Colleen Hamilton, Chapter President

Hello Fellow California Members,

Well, my grandsons left all too soon and so did my hummingbirds.  The hummingbirds were only in the nest a scant 3 weeks and flew away on July 4th.  Yes, Independence Day!  They had grown so big they could barely sit on top of the nest.  What fun to watch the two baby hummingbirds grow and get ready to fly.  By the time the babies were 6 days old, Mama Hummingbird was gone almost all day, every day.  Research told me that she must feed on tiny worms and insects in order to have the protein that her babies need.  It must have taken most of her time to feed because the only indications she was still around were contentedly growing babies and bird-poop covered magnolia leaves.

With Mama gone, I had a lot of opportunities to bird watch.  Of course, I never touched the birds or their nest; however, I did get quite close.  It was easy when Mama was not around dive-bombing me!  The baby hummingbirds never seemed afraid of me.  I feel certain they knew I would not hurt them as I had been around since they hatched.

The day they flew away, Mama was around to see them off.  I am sure she helped prod them out of the nest.  I would have loved to get pictures of that, but Mama was not pleased when I was around!  Of course, I was happy I had taken pictures that day because the next morning they were gone.   My husband and I felt like empty nesters again!

This entire event was quite interesting and exciting.  I certainly hope each of you have such stories and events to share with your clients.  I took some wonderful pictures and movies, and have shown them to my clients.  They’ve been amazed and have loved the story, so I’m hoping you will enjoy these images too!  The first picture is of the babies at one day old.  The second shows them at about 10 days, and the last was taken the day they flew away.

Your 2008 president,

Colleen Hamilton

Chapter Board Opportunities

by Janet Bell, APLD, Immediate Past-President

Attention all members!

If you’d like to develop yourself further as a professional, network and share with other designers, as well as have the opportunity to participate in the growth and development of this great organization, please consider joining the California Chapter Board.

We have all enjoyed the benefits of membership in APLD.   If you are not aware of this already, the entertaining and educational events and programs sponsored by your local districts are the result of the Chapter Board coming together to lay the foundation for these activities.

There are many positions available, which make use of our different and varied strengths and skills.  Many of us came to this profession as a second career, and we have talents that we may not be using in our design businesses, but that can be put to use here.  Board positions require different time commitments – some are project-oriented, some are monthly commitments (for example, Communications Chair), some require specific skills (for example, Treasurer).  See the end of this article for short descriptions of each Board position.

The Chapter Board meets four to six times a year at different locations in the greater Bay Area.  The meetings last five to six hours, including lunch and breaks.  We have funds in the budget to defray travel costs for board members who live out of the area.  The meetings include committee reports, hearing what the districts are up to, ongoing planning to support the districts’ events and programs, and examination of the national organization’s plans and how they affect our Chapter.

I have been on the Chapter Board for about five years.  I have been stimulated by our discussions, have grown in self-confidence, and feel grateful to have had this opportunity to support our organization.   By taking leadership roles, we challenge ourselves in ways that have results that are beyond what we can imagine.  I invite you to be a part of this.

Please contact me if you are interested in joining the Chapter Board or if you have any questions about these great opportunities.  I will be happy to talk with you and/or direct your call to one of our other members.

ReDeck ReDux

By Alma Hecht, APLD

When I first moved into my home, a beefy, old-growth redwood beam retained a minor elevation change.  It sliced the garden in an awkward way, so I removed and saved it.

After living here a few years, I needed to replace a section of my garden fence and looked on Craig’s List for reclaimed wood.  The headline “Reclaimed Redwood Boards Available.” caught my eye.  I contacted a resourceful salvager/builder who brought over reclaimed boards and transformed them into what instantly became an established addition to the existing fence.

Now, a few more years have gone by.  The neighbors on the other side of my property were remodeling and wanted to rebuild our shared fence to match their new deck’s style (at their own expense).  I agreed with the caveat that their contractor disassemble the fence and leave me with the boards.

Just last month I had to move my sump pump from inside to outside resulting in an awkward but necessary hole to access the pump. In an “aha moment”,  I realized I could cover it in a little deck with a trap door, thus putting all that good wood to use.

So…I call my contractor.  I explain the situation.  I tell him I want to reuse my saved redwood beam for the joists, and the twice-saved fence boards for the decking.  The contractor replies, “You know, it will take more time this way.  I could do it much faster if I just went to Home Depot and bought new boards.”  “Actually,” I answer, “I am happier paying you for your skill and using what I have.  This way you don’t drive to the store, and you don't purchase new & inferior materials that have been harvested by creating erosion & destroying habitat, hauled to a mill by trucks contributing to climate change, sawn up only to have poison infused into the wood, and lastly hauled to a store by more trucks.”  He scratches his head, smiles, and says, “I never thought of it that way.  Thanks.” He returns to work and in several hours a re-deck is reborn without ever having to consume one new stick of wood.

Dreaming of California?

Sometimes you just have to make your own opportunities!  The following description & photograph was submitted by member Joanne Naegele of Meadow Vista.

"I participated in a three-day Home and Garden Show in Auburn, California by creating an on-site display at the fairgrounds.  The theme was 'California Dreamin'.   I built the structure and the pond right on the spot, including adapting an antique oil pump so that water would flow from it into the canoe below and then recirculate.   Quite by accident, I found an old California state flag, which can be seen on the flagpole.  People strolling through the Landscaper's Meadow actually thought the display was part of the park.  The experience was great fun, and the people at the Home Show were delighted and want me back."

Description

Escape those August doldrums and join us for a much-requested presentation on the uses of metal in the garden!

Our speaker will be Eric Powell, a noted artist and metal fabricator. Eric will present many of his designs of gates, furniture, railings and sculptures and will discuss various metals and finishes. Most of his work is high-end, but he will also discuss what is possible for a moderate sized budget.

Powell says of his work, ‘In making sculpture, gates and furniture I cross over the line of so-called function and so-called non-function all the time. On the one hand they are distinct and different languages. On the other hand they inform and influence each other. I don’t think in strictly categorical terms. The difference between design and art is something to explore, not something to try to define’.

Powell’s studio is located in West Berkeley. His work includes commissions and his direct studio work. He has completed over four hundred public and private commissions since 1989.

Powell’s most recent Public Art commissions are ‘Mandala Gates’, entry gates for the City of Berkeley Corporation Yard, Berkeley (2007); ‘Ripple Effect’, the gateway to Goodman Swimming Pool in Madison, Wisconsin (2006); the entry gate for Bella Vista Park in Oakland (2005); and five bronze sculptures for Golden Gate Park’s Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco (2003). He is presently engaged in public art projects for the cities of Brentwood, San Francisco, and Castro Valley.

Between summer and folks attending the National Conference in CT, we suggest using your two-hour meeting time volunteering with an organization of your choice.

Here’s one option: you are welcome to join Alma volunteering Wednesday mornings on the restoration team in Glen Canyon. It's fun, beautiful, dog friendly, and if you aren’t aware of this natural resource, it’s a great way to become acquainted with the 75-acre open space filled with native species, birds, reptiles, and Islais Creek in slow summer flow.  Google Glen Canyon Park for more information.

Alternatively, please let us know with whom you will be volunteering - maybe write a paragraph for the newsletter.

Lawn Alternatives

Sponsored by

East Bay District

Sharon Gibson, sbgi@att.net

Description

Alternatives to the Traditional Resource-Intensive Lawn:

Our first speaker, Deva Luna, combines her passion for plants with a desire to enhance the environment. She is a Lifetime Master Gardener, Gardening Instructor, Coordinator of the Santa Clara Teaching Garden, Landscape Designer and Horticulturist for EarthCare Landscaping. She has a degree in "Plants and Art" from UC Davis. Currently she's into edible gardening, art cars, tree houses, chickens, pervious concrete, water catchment, and learning how to manage money.

She says: "There's a strong movement towards environmentalism, water conservation, and recognition of the impact we have on the planet. The routine use of lawns for only aesthetic purposes is coming under scrutiny. To both homeowners and designers, sometimes a large blank slate of lawn can be an intimidating canvas to replace. You'll come away from this inspiring talk with dozens of ideas, illustrated by pictures which say more than a thousand words."

Our second speaker will be Aaron Garner from Heavenly Greens. He'll fill us in on many aspects of using synthetic turf, including:

  • appropriate applications, including putting greens.
  • maintenance issues (dogs relieving themselves, leaf drop, chlorine from pools, etc.).
  • life expectancy.
  • installation methods, including substructure requirements vs. installing directly over soil.
  • installers (who's available).
  • cost to install.
