The U.S. Enivironmental Protection Agency has a certification program called SmartWay. Vehicles that qualify for the
SmartWay mark are the cleanest and most fuel-efficient available in today’s market. With gas as expensive as it is, it's smart to learn
about SmartWay.
There are two levels of SmartWay certification:
SmartWay cars score at least 6 out of 10 on air pollution and greenhouse gas tests. Many of
these cars get at least 20 mpg combined city and highway.
SmartWay Elite cars score 9 or above on the air pollution and greenhouse gas tests. These cars get a
minimum of 31 mpg combined.
If every light duty vehicle in the country were SmartWay-certified, carbon dioxide emissions
would decrease by about 214 billion pounds annually. That’s equivalent to the emissions from nearly 20 million vehicles each
year.
