GreekFest Makes a Comeback

Sarah Russell

After years of retirement, GreekFest is making its triumphant return to the MTSU campus on Tuesday, September 11 in the JUB Tennessee Room from 7 to 11.  In the past, GreekFest has been a successful event that not only welcomed students back to MTSU but also drastically increased recruitment registration numbers.

This year, GreekFest makes its return with free food, a DJ, NPHC step performances every hour, and of course, prizes.  The coveted giveaways include two free Road Rallies, $200 to Phillips Bookstore and more.  But GreekFest is not just about winning prizes and a free dinner.  This event allows Greeks and nonGreeks to have fun together in an informal setting.  If students are interested in recruitment, they have the opportunity to talk to members of the Greek community and see how Greeks interact with each other.

“We decided to bring back the event to show how diverse yet unified we are as a Greek community,” said Lauren Ruth, GreekFest Director.

While this year’s GreekFest sounds like a great start, the Office of Greek Affairs plans to continue building on the event each year.  In the years to come, GreekFest is intended to become a tradition that MTSU students look forward to at the beginning of each fall semester.  Don’t miss the comeback of GreekFest and the beginning of a new tradition at MTSU!

Greek of the Week

Whitney Carr

As team “Letters” sat pondering who was worthy of being named our first Greek of the Week for this fall semester, we seemed to hit a wall. School has only been in session for a few weeks, so not too much has been going on with Greeks aside from getting ready for recruitment. It isn’t award season and intramurals haven’t begun. So we went with an obvious choice, Mrs. Carrie Yuell (formerly Carrie Smith). Carrie deserves this privilege now more than ever. As an alumna of Alpha Omicron Pi here at MTSU, Carrie last roamed this campus only years ago. She was an active member of AOPi, was on the dance team and dated a star football player, David, who just became her husband!

With Gentry bettering his Greek career at Alabama, Carrie is the sole person we Greeks turn to with all of our questions, concerns and problems. She spends long hours in the OGA (Office of Greek Affairs) and is ever-present at every function, meeting and social event we have. She signs party forms and helps us figure out how to handle sensitive issues within our chapters. Not only is she the ringmaster of our crazy Greek circus here at Middle Tennessee, she is now learning how to be the best wife possible.

We want to take these few minutes to thank Carrie for all the hard work and effort she puts into maintaining a Greek system at MTSU that is both smoothly operating and productive. So next time you see Mrs. Yuell, make sure to tell her congratulations and thanks for all of her hard work!

SGA Makes Changes in First Meeting

Sarah Russell

The Student Government Association wasted no time in its first meeting last week by making several changes such as passing legislation and approving new appointed senators.

The senate passed a bill to formally adopt Habitat for Humanity as an official philanthropy of SGA.  With the addition of Habitat for Humanity, SGA plans to build a home for a local family during the Habitat Blitz Build which will begin on October 17 and end with a dedication on November 1.  Habitat for Humanity joins the AIDS Quilt as the two official philanthropies of SGA.  A second bill was passed at the meeting to replace the AIDS Quilt Director position with a Philanthropic Coordinator.

In addition to these bills, the senate also approved President Chassen Haynes’ newly appointed senators.  These senators include:

College of Education & Behavioral Sciences

Trenton Hughes (ΣN)

Jamie Boyd

College of Basic & Applied Sciences

Daniel Gammon (ΣAE)

College of Liberal Arts

Sandra Wilson

Seats that are still open for appointment include the College of Basic & Applied Science (1 seat), College of Mass Communication (1 seat), and Undeclared (1 seat).  For information on how to apply for an appointed position, contact President Chassen Haynes at sgapres@mtsu.edu.
