We had six participants this summer who worked with us in our LIC space as part of the NYC Summer Youth Employment program.  They learned basic bicycle mechanic skills and job search skills.  They had the opportunity to earn their own bicycle through community service and as their final project they organized our first ever street sale in LIC.  They sold 9 adult bicycles and 1 youth bicycle- congratulations!

If you or someone you know between the ages of 14-18 is interested in doing an internship during the fall/winter, please contact our Program Coordinator, Laida Aguirre.  We will be starting to train a whole new crew this September.

Notes from the Shop, by Chris Brunson

Considered by many to be a frivolous accessory, the bell is a very useful tool.  Bicycles are fairly quiet and fast machines which have a tendency to sneak up on others.  Whether it's a pedestrian, a car, or a fellow rider; a "RING, RING" of your bell will alert the unsuspecting of your presence and help both of you interact more safely.  In group rides--like the upcoming NYC Century--try using a bell to substitute (or supplement) yelling "On your left!" when passing others.  If you still prefer yelling, use your bell to greet curious onlookers:  A "RING, RING," a wave, and a smile usually does the trick.  It will remind people how fun riding a bike can be.

The DUMBO store will be open from 8am to 1pm for the NYC Century Bike Tour on September 9- we are along the route.

On August 13, we had 15 high school students from the Brooklyn College Now summer program come out to our DUMBO location for a workshop.  Led by Chris, our Head Mechanic, and Sean, our Store Associate, participants learned about our work, recycling and how to fix a flat tire.  The TV show Neighborhood Beat with Brooklyn Cable Access came out and did a story about us that day as well- stay tuned for show time and listing info!

Boost Mobile Rock Corps volunteers were out in full force on August 29 at our LIC facility.  They sorted aluminum and steel so that it could be recycled and re-used.  They worked hard, had fun and earned a free rock concert ticket in the process.

If you have a group of folks who would be interested in doing a large volunteer project, please contact us- your help makes a difference!
