Email Address Contest
to Expand Pink Link™ Advocacy

Breast cancer advocates all across the Commonwealth look forward to receiving their monthly Pink Link™ in their email inbox.  In the new year, we would like to increase our email database and provide even more people with Pink Link™ - and we need your help!  If you provide us with five or more email addresses of people who are interested in breast cancer issues, we will enter you into a drawing for a fabulous prize.  Just send your friends' email addresses to kim@pabreastcancer.org by February 28, 2007 with your name and address (in case you are the winner) and we will personally invite them to sign up for Pink Link™.   With each additional email you provide, you are helping us reach more and more survivors, medical professionals, and advocates all across the state!

Fundraiser of the Month

Agnes White (above center with PBCC staffers Carol Burkholder and Kim Eubanks), an Independent Longaberger Home Consultant, along with her entire Country Sampler Branch, organized a fundraiser called "Together We Have Hope" on October 15, 2006.  The event took place at the Blair Mill Inn in Horsham and the day included a delicious lunch, guest speakers - survivors Kay Bachand and Gail Hibshman, Longaberger product displays and sales, a Longaberger basket weaver, and fantastic raffle prizes.   Agnes and her group raised over $6200, tripling last year's event total!  Thank you, Agnes and friends

MASTECTOMY BRAS AND PROSTHESES COVERED BY MEDICARE

Medicare, and some other insurance plans, will pay for one breast prosthesis per year.  If your Medicare deductible has been met for the year, this would be a good time to purchase a prosthesis or mastectomy bra.

Always check with your insurance company to determine which post-mastectomy products are covered under your plan.  For more information on Medicare coverage, call 1-800-MEDICARE.

Dear ,

THE FEDERAL DRUG ADMINISTRATION HAS EXPANDED THE USE OF HERCEPTIN

On November 15, the FDA expanded the approved use of trastuzumab (Herceptin) for the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer after lumpectomy or mastectomy.  Earlier approval was limited to treatment for metastatic breast cancer.  Two studies showed positive results in women taking Herceptin combined with chemotherapy.  These women had fewer recurrences for up to three years after surgery.

Additional information about trastuzumab is available here.

"WESTMORELAND WALKS: TAKING STEPS AGAINST BREAST CANCER" RAISES $30,000 FOR THE PBCC

The rain certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the volunteers, survivors, and participants in the 5th Annual Westmoreland Walks on October 30th!  The event kicked off at the host site, Aestique Medical Center and Spa in Greensburg, with Celebration of Life activities honoring survivors wearing pink t-shirts.  The walkers then proceeded to beautiful Twin Lakes Park.

The PBCC is extremely grateful to everyone involved in the Westmoreland Walks who raised $30,000 to help the PBCC continue our efforts on behalf of women in  Pennsylvania.  Donations are also made to treat newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients to a special "Spa Serenity Day" of personal centering and rejuvenation.  At the Spa Day, survivors participate in educational programming, accessing spa services provided through the Spa at Aestique, and enjoy a day full of healthy activities such as Art Therapy and Tai Chi.

ADAMS COUNTY FIRST TO GO 100% PINK THROUGH THE PBCC'S PAINT PA PINK CHALLENGE

Thanks to a generous Paint PA Pink donation from Dr. D. Lawrence Wickerham and others, Adams County is the first county to go bright pink on our online map.  Dr. Wickerham, Associate Chairman of the NSABP Foundation in Pittsburgh, has been a friend of the PBCC for years and received the PBCC's Potamkin  research award at the 2006 PA Breast Cancer Coalition Annual Conference this past October.  Dr. Wickerham grew up in Adams County, which is why he chose to paint that county pink.

We've been crisscrossing Pennsylvania for years, spreading the message of breast cancer awareness and advocacy everywhere we travel.  Now, we want to Paint Pennsylvania Pink - and we need your help!

Make a donation today and then reach out to your friends by asking them to help us paint our online map of Pennsylvania bright pink.  Each dollar contributed is another splash of color added to the map, and it will be used to make a difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors and women here in Pennsylvania.

Your donations determine which county will be painted bright pink next!  Click to learn more about this unique program.
