Blood and platelet collections traditionally decrease during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. The need remains constant though, and you can help reduce shortages by donating blood at the Brigham and Women's Hospital Blood Donor Center or platelets at the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center.

Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center at Milford Regional Medical Center opens its doors on January 14
Beginning January 14, 2008, cancer patients in the Milford, Mass. area, southwest of Boston, can receive their care closer to home. The new, 54,000-square foot, two-floor center will provide comprehensive cancer services, including radiation therapy and imaging.

Drug combination shrinks breast cancer metastases in brain
A combination of a "targeted" therapy and chemotherapy shrank metastatic brain tumors by at least 50 percent in one-fifth of patients with aggressive HER2-positive breast cancer, according to data presented by Dana-Farber at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Three-drug combination 'extremely promising' as first-line therapy for multiple myeloma, researchers say
A new combination of bortezomib (Velcade) and two other drugs is showing a very high response rate in patients newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a team headed by Dana-Farber investigators reported at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology.

Data confirm dasatinib's effectiveness in resistant chronic myelogenous leukemia
Updated clinical trial results show that the drug dasatinib (Sprycel) continues to be highly effective in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia who were unable to tolerate Gleevec or who developed resistance to it, reports a team led by researchers at Dana-Farber.
