Catch the tail end of the Earth Week Film Series at Gravity Lounge. Eat at Bill's (April 25) looks at Bill Fujimoto's famed Monterey Market, highlighting the best of what can happen to a local economy when folks "Buy Fresh, Buy Local." Kilowatt Ours (April 26) reveals the consequences of our coal-powered economy. Filmmaker Jeff Barrie takes viewers on a journey from the coal mines of West Virginia to the solar panel fields of Florida.

Governor's Awards for the Arts 2008

Deadline for Nominations: May 15

 

Nominations are now sought for the Governor's Awards for the Arts 2008, to be presented by Governor Tim Kaine in September. The Awards, which have been given only three times in Virginia, recognize outstanding achievement by Virginia artists, arts organizations, and those who support and encourage the arts.

 

Anyone in the Commonwealth can submit a nomination to the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Eligible areas include architecture, dance, literature, crafts, music, folk arts, film/video, photography, theatre, visual arts, arts education and services for the arts.

"Three Realists"

Three realists, Pat Cook, John Murray, and Rick Weaver, all of whom have received national recognition for their work, will be exhibiting at the Nichols Annex Gallery in Barboursville through June 15th. While the human figure in its communicative and expressive form dominates the work of Cook and Weaver, John Murray's passion is still lifes in striking compositions.

Play On! presents Frank Loesser's Tony Award-winning musical fable of Broadway. Set in New York City in the 1940s, "Guys and Dolls" is a swinging musical that features gangsters, gamblers, burlesque dancers and mission dolls, ultimately bringing together an unlikely pair of lovers.
