Medicare to Cover Cost of Breast Cancer Test
The PBCC reported in the Spring 2004 FrontlineTM newsletter that
women newly-diagnosed with breast cancer now have access to a new test that helps determine whether their cancer may recur. A study
conducted by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) evaluated Genomic Health's breast cancer test,
OncotypeDXTM. This test was able to predict, with unprecedented precision, which patients had a higher risk that the cancer
would return.
Medicare has now agreed to cover the company's test determining whether a woman with early breast cancer is likely to be helped
by chemotherapy. The 125,000 women diagnosed each year with estrogen-sensitive tumors whose cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes are
candidates for the test.
