HRCI Announces New Levels of HR Certification
Shelly Prochaska SPHR, Manager Southeast Region SHRM
The Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) Board of Directors has approved the development of two new certifications that
will encourage the mastery of knowledge at an entry/administrative level and assess
key competencies at a strategic business competency level. Both certifications were approved after
conducting practice analysis studies in 2004, as well as feasibility studies that
demonstrated both the need and interest.
Administrative-Level Certification
One new certification will reflect the knowledge needed in administrative-level
HR positions (nonexempt-level employees). Candidates for this certification will
include those who do not meet the exempt-level experience qualifications for PHR
certification but nonetheless need and use HR knowledge on the job. These individuals
might continue their careers in strictly administrative positions, or the certification
may serve as an entry point for further development within the profession.
Strategic Business Competencies Certification
This new certification will focus on strategic business competencies--outside
the conventional functional areas of HR--needed by senior-level HR professionals.
The new certification will complement the SPHR and will be of particular interest
to those professionals who are aspiring to obtain a top HR job within an organization.
Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate mastery of key business competencies
needed in executive positions. The addition of this certification will help to
advance the HR profession.
These certifications are in the developmental stage only. Stay tuned for more
information!

Spring Certification Study Groups Now Forming
Tami Lambert Vice Chair Professional Development
The Professional Development Committee is pleased to announce the formation of
the spring PHR and SPHR study groups. If you are interested in participating
in a group-led study group as part of your preparation for the certification exam,
please mark your calendar for an informational planning meeting to be held on
Thursday, Feb. 16 at 5:45 p.m.
This planning meeting will be hosted by the law firm of Miller & Martin, PLLC, which has once again generously offered their meeting room facilities
as well as light refreshments for our spring '06 study groups. Miller &
Martin offices are located in downtown Nashville on the 12th floor of 1200 Nashville
Place, 150 4th Avenue North, Nashville.
At the planning meeting we will determine the night of the week for the group
to meet, facilitator/coordinator, study materials to be used, etc., based on the
interest and needs of the group, so attendance at this meeting is important.
Study groups will begin meeting the last week in February and there is no cost
to MT-SHRM members. The Study Group Committee is led by Kara Shea, Attorney with
Miller & Martin. Kara Shea may be reached at 615-244-9270.
If you are considering sitting for the PHR or SPHR exams you must register for
the exam by March 17 and the testing windows are May 1 - June 30, 2006. To learn
more about certification or to register for an exam, visit HRCI.
Congratulations are in order for Joe Hardy and Tom Norvell who may now add SPHR
and PHR respectively to their titles. Joe and Tom worked hard to earn this important
professional designation and we commend their efforts. If you have also recently
earned a new designation, please let us know so that we may acknowledge your achievement
as well.

Are You Due for Re-certification?
Kellie Conn SPHR, President Elect
Do you have a PHR, SPHR or GPHR certification? If so, you need to recertify
every three year to maintain your certification. It's fairly easy, but according
to SHRM nearly 3,000 certified professionals failed to recertify in 2005.
In fact, sixty credit hours during the three years is all that is needed to validate
recertification. Of course you can always re-take the exam, but then walking
across a hot bed of coals would be easier, right?
Credit hours can be obtained through continuing education, instruction, on-the-job
experience, research and publishing, leadership, and professional membership in
a national HR professional association, volunteer activities and a host of other
things we do in our day-to-day world. Click here for details on how credit hours are earned.
Your application can be submitted online or through the mail any time after you've
accumulated the required 60 credit hours. Processing time is 4-6 weeks. To log
in to your personal online re-certification file and post your re-certification
activities, just visit the HRCI Web site and click on My Recert File.
Supporting documentation, such as certificates of attendance, are not required
with your application. Keep a file of your documentation for at least six months
after your re-certification is approved in case you're selected for a random audit.
There is an application fee of $100 due at the time of submission.
For those that received their certification or last re-certification in the Spring
of 2003, your certification cycle ends on June 30, 2006. Re-certification applications
are accepted up to 12 months after the re-certification expiration date with an
additional late fee.
For more information about re-certification, click here.
